To the Eye Doc
This afternoon Luna will be heading back to the eye doctor for her checkup. Hopefully all will be well. She will be joined this time by Henry, who will be getting his first exam by the ophthalmologist. It seems he has developed a bump on his eye. We have no idea what it is or how it got there. But is sure has made his eye very red and irritated looking. So we figured we better get him in to see the eye doctor right away. Since we are taking Henry we might as well take Luna because she is just about a week shy of her checkup appt.
Can you say never a dull moment?

It is never a dull moment with pugs…If it’s not one it’s the other…here too! Best of luck at the eye doc. I hope Luna’s news is great and Henry has nothing to worry about!!

I have aquestion about my rescue pug Petunia. She is on eye drop/goo twice daily and I don’t think (before I adopted her) she has ever seen an eye doctor. Her eyes are dark just like you Luna’s and do you think its a good idea to take her to a specialist and not just the vet? I want her to have the best care possible for her eyes. Thanks!

In my opinion, for what it’s worth, I would definitley take Petunia to an opthamologist. Pugs’ eyes are known to be a source of issues and, if not treated appropriately, blindness does occur. Since she is already on meds (I’m assuming from your vet), I think it would be a good idea to get a thorough check by a specialist. One of my boys has eye issues and does have an opthamologist in addition to his vet. Better to be safe than sorry! Good luck!

I second what Heather said. I would recommend taking your pug to an eye specialist for a checkup. My regular vet is awesome, but the eye specialist is very thorough and can explain a lot more since they only deal with eyes. You might not need to go back as frequently as we do, but after having an initial exam, at least they will have a baseline on hand to compare things to in the future.
At a normal visit, Luna has close-up pictures taken of her eye, gets a thorough exam of her eyes with the lights on and off and often times she gets a Schirmer Tear test down that measures here tear production.
Ophthalmologist practices aren’t always close to home. The closest one to us is about 90 miles south of us.
Also, the cost can add up quickly so be prepared. With Luna, we always joke, that she is the best pug at racking up CC reward points! Pretty soon she’ll have earned herself an airline ticket

Your little luna is prescious! How did she receive the bald spots?
Jade - We are not 100% sure how Luna got her bald spots. She is a rescue and before she came to us she had a very severe case of mange that went untreated for a long period of time. We think this caused the missing fur on her chest. As for the spots on her back, they are scars and are the result of some sort of fight or abuse. We can’t say for sure.
