Is your pug a picky eater?
Darci and Abbey the pug wrote in wondering about the eating habits of other pugs. It seems Abbey will eat just about anything and Darci was wondering if all pugs were that way.
Well, I can certainly say that Henry will eat ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING! I have yet to come across anything that he will turn down.
Benjamin, has turned down a few things, but for the most part he eats everything as well. He won’t eat lettuce or cucumbers and he isn’t real fond of spinach. However, if it is high in carbs he will devour it (pumpkin bread!).
Luna, on the other hand, has quite a discerning palette. Just the other day she turned down a graham cracker and I must add this tickled the boys pink. She doesn’t particularly care for Cheez-Its either and she never eats her broccoli.
What about you? Does your pug eat everything? Or does he turn some food items down? Tell us about in the comments and vote in the poll.

Mine won’t eat mushrooms. They get all excited, get it in their mouth…swish it around a moment and spit it out. Then they walk around, sporting a disappointed look :D
My pugs used to eat anything and everything that hit the floor, but then I started them on a salmon-based kibble…which is excellent for their coats…now the little darlings turn up their noses at anything that DOESN’T have fish in it! I’ve even had to switch to dog treats made with fish because the standard Milkbone just won’t do.
OMG!! My female wont eat Cheeze-its either!
How strange!!
My male HATES bananas and black olives… He will spit them out and then he wont trust me again till the next day and sniffs anything I try to give him! HAHA
My Riley will eat just about anything…he doesn’t even take the time to figure out what it is half the time. Baxter, on the other hand, his palette has changed as he’s aged. He used to love bananas and carrots, but won’t eat them now. They both love grapes and american cheese. Baxter is always cautious and takes his time investigating exactly what he’s being offered!
Heather, please be careful giving your pugs
grapes or raisins. They are toxic to dogs.
I didn’t know this until just a short time
ago.
Hi Brenda,
I’ve actually heard of this before and researched it…it’s only toxic if they eat a multitude of them at one time…sugar overload. Thanks for your concern…
Hmmm…now you made me paranoid so I looked again and seems there’s new info now about a toxin in them…strange. My boys are 8 and 9 years old and have had a few grapes here and there their whole life…
Guess I’ll have to look into it some more as information changes..thanks again.
When Benjamin & Henry were pups we used to give them grapes. Then we heard they were bad for dogs so we stopped. Then we heard they were OK and then they weren’t. We just heard so much conflicting information that we decided not to give them grapes anymore.
Now if they ever say that pumpkin bread is bad for dogs, Benjamin is going to demand a complete investigation with a full report.
I think I better get that pumpkin bread recipe b/c Bax and Ri are NOT going to be happy that momma is now way too paranoid to ever give them their grapies again!
Here is the recipe for all those out there that aren’t too fond of cooking.
- Head to your local Bob Evans for Dinner during the Fall
- Get pumpkin bread with your meal
- Ask the waitress for a few extra slices to take home
Now, if Baxter & Riley take to the pumpkin bread like Benny you are going to have to be real careful on where you store the pumpkin bread in your house. When I let the pugs out the crate, the first thing Benny does is smell my hands. He will know right away that I had pumpkin bread and if he smells it he will not rest until he has some.
If you like to bake, we will have to talk to Ann. She has a great pumpkin bread recipe that Benny loved.
Meimei used to not like bananas - but since we started buying organic - she loves them! She spit out celery once, but I tried it again with her and she took her time with it and then begged for more.
Miko, my poor girl, would eat anything we gave her - sadly we can’t give her much because of allergies (and intolerences for preservatives).
hello.. i love your blogs about your babies… i’m about to try your special meal diet on my 2 pugs next week. i would just like to ask: in one of your blogs i saw that you cooked the ground turkey already for the week. then do you just add the other stuff (yogurt, oatmeal.. etc..)when they are about to eat? thank you for your time on this.! more pug power.
Since we don’t have Bob Evans here…wonder if Ann will share her recipe. If Benny gave it paws up, I’m sure the boys will love it!!
Mine picks through her mixed dog food to pick out the bits that she likes. The stuff she doesn’t like will end up on the floor, all around her bowl.
My pugs don’t really like any green food (lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, etc.) Other than that, all food is pretty much fair game!
I am shocked that there are so many discerning pug pallets out there! Someone once told me because of their flat faces, that pug taste buds were not as fine-tuned. My pug, Belle will eat just about anything -including rocks and tree bark - if we’re not careful! We’ve starting chopping up baby carrots and using those as treats instead of cookies!
I am sorry to say that I don’t exactly have a recipe for pumpkin bread…I am a baker that flies by the seat of her pants! What I did was convert a people pumpkin bread recipe to one suitable for pugs (and people who don’t want sugar and fat in their foods! Find a pumpkin bread recipe and start substituting: Whole wheat, buckwheat and oat flour for the white flour (oat flour is just oatmeal ground up in a blender), applesauce substitutes for the sugar and fat, yogurt and milk to moisten it, eggs for leavening and the flax seed and wheat germ for an extra nutritional kick. It takes a little experimentation, but as long as the batter looks like people pumpkin bread batter, it will work. Pour into loaf pans and bake at 350 degrees for about 45-50 minutes.
Baby Benny’s Pugkin Bread
Contains whole wheat flour, buckwheat flour,
oat flour, pureed pumpkin, eggs, milk, flax seed,
wheat germ, yogurt and unsweetened
applesauce
My pug Bennie is almost 3 years old, and to date I have not seen him turn down any food.
And in fact, he has often eaten non-food items such as kleenex, paper, feathers, and even once a pen cap. We’re working to learn not to be a pug vacuum cleaner.
all the comments are sooo funny and cute!
my late apple love all kinds of fruits (include durians!) except orange/lemon. she is a very picky eater whn it comes to meat, she only take fresh meat. for canned food, she will only beef. she loved sweets and her fave food in the world is persimmon.
still loving apple after two yrs pluz…TT.TT
luv, almond
Pugsley won’t eat mushrooms or olives..
Angus LOVES anything and everything that is edible. He even tries to eat things that aren’t! Why are Pugs such Pigs!? hahaha…
My Hailey will eat just about anything if she is able to chew or swallow it. but she knows when her food limit has been reached and doesn’t consantly visit her regular food dish. the one thing that worries me with her begging at the counters while you are cooking is that ONIONS are bad for dogs and they always end up on the floor when you chop them!
wow… is it really healthy to feed pugs all this “people” food? I am researching because I just recently received a new Brindle Pug mix and he wont eat his pup food for anything! His big brother( which is not really his brother but a full pug) has no problem eating his doggie food… but I’m starting to wonder if he’s overweight? HELP PLEASE!!!
I’m Winston (named after the old Nascar Winston Cup Series!) and I love my Hill’s Science Diet Dog Food…mommy tried giving me carrots once….didn’t quite take to them, I don’t know what they are, they don’t taste like dog food…Mommy is nervous about giving me anything other than dog food after she spent Xmas night at the vet with me after I ate wallpaper…I think she wants to give me apples…any advice from anyone for my mom?
Hi Winston,
Benjamin, Henry & Luna eat apples all the time. It is one of their favorite foods. I wouldn’t eat too much at first as it might be a shock to your system, but as far as we know apples aren’t bad for pugs.
Thanks Benjamin, Harry & Luna for your advice, I’m looking forward to trying out these new apple “treats”
Winston
i want to buy a dog but i dont know if a pug would be a wise choise cause i go to the beach alot…i dont know if he will stand the heat on the bech or not
The only “human” food I eat is carrots, I actually like them now! apples (as a special treat when I’m really good!), lettuce (I like to play with it) & a bit of vanilla yogurt (my fave) - I’m not a picky eater however, I don’t think mommy likes to give me human food - she finds it’s too processed and even she has trouble digesting it sometimes. I’ll stick with my puppy food, better be safe than sorry…
The only thing my 8 month old pug won’t eat is lettuce..otherwise, the sky is the limit…lolol
She especially loves goldfish crackers(cheddar), and peanut butter.
MY PUG OTIS WILL EAT ANYTHING!GREEN PEPPERS,TOMATOES,PICKLES,APPLES,LETTUCE… YOU NAME IT WE CANT FIND ANYTHING HE WONT EAT I FIND THIS REALLY STRANGE IS THIS NORMAL. HE GOES IN MY 3 YEAR OLDS ROOM AND EATS ANY OF HER SMALL TOYS HE CAN FIT IN HIS MOUTH… THEN I FIND THEM IN THE YARD OF COURSE…. LOL PLEASE HELP
Don’t give your pugs (or any dogs) ONIONS, TOMATOES, and especially GRAPES and RAISINS (which have toxins that can kill dogs-I have read this in numerous places out on the Internet-It’s not a joke.) I read an article where an owner listened to her vet (that her dog would be ok after eating just a few raisins). The owner woke up the next day and her dog was dead! It’s best to check out on the Internet, before giving your precious “baby” any people food. Who would have thought that I shouldn’t give my pug Macadamia nuts (or other nuts, either)? Just because pugs WILL eat EVERYTHING-does not mean that pugs SHOULD eat everything.
I have 2 full bred pugs and 1 half pug half smthng else…we’re not quite sure who her dad is :p
Anyway, all three of them will eat pretty much ANYTHING!
They love fruits: banana’s, apples, mango’s, oranges, watermelon, vegies in their dinner: carrots, peas, lettuce, broccoli, grass, frangipani flowers…..ANYTHING! :D
hi, i have a one year old pug who lovessss eating mango, does any one know if it’s okay for pugs or no?
I gave my pug Percy Almond Butter yesterday, it’s like Peanut Butter, just to see what would happen- e.g. if he couldn’t stop licking his snout. Is that that bad?
I was wondering if its ok to give wheat based treats to my lil 5 month pug cherie!
Our Harley is not eating that much. What kind of food do you give to your pug? Any recommendations? Thanks.
My puglet was giving us a hard time after christmas. He used to finish all of his food, but after the parties and the running around it seems as though he got used to having some people snacks….grrrr….So He basically would snack here and there through out the day. So, seeing that his energy levels were fine, we looked up things about picky eating. We tried putting a tiny bit of olive oil on his food and so he would gobble up all the pieces with olive oil on it, not finishing his bowlful.
Then I mixed some strawberries in with his eukanuba and he did a little better. But then my hubby came up with the idea to throw a little beef broth (low sodium) on the food and heat it up in the microwave for 20 seconds and put the food on a plate instead of in his bowl. WELL, puglet nearly lost it he was so happy to have warm eats with some “sauce”. He ate the whole thing and keeps going back to lick the plate hoping there is more. I would give that a try since it takes just a splash of broth and keeps them from begging too much for your food!
cheers!
Bond’s favorites are crab, cheez-its, french fries, bananas, gummy bears and Sweetarts, all of which he only gets once in a while when we are eating them. As far as “inedibles” go, he loves q-tips, the skins from baked potatoes and our cats
. He will basically eat any kind of fruit or vegetable or meat except I don’t give him grapes and he doesn’t like oranges or kiwi.
My Pugz-e Wugz-e will eat alot of stuff. He is very young though so he still has time and he hasn’t tried everything yet. Two things he definitely will not eat are lettuce and carrots. He’ll sniff it then move it with his paw. One thing he loves to eat which is rare is snow. when i take him out for a walk he will stop at every CLEAN pile of snow and tap chunks off then eat them. One thing he absolutely loves is apple chunks. I was giving him some and after every little piece he would sit down down and turn his head. How cute.? I love my pug so much.
I have a fawn pug that is a little over a year old.He is very skinny and looks like a runt.We rarely feed him table scraps and only reward him with treats when he does tricks. But he hates his dog food.I have tried a few different kinds and he treats it like its nothing special and wont eat some days.I also do not buy regular store dog food because its all bad for the animal.I have one right now called Natural Choice that doesnt have nasty preservatives or corn etc in it.He likes it okay but still doesnt like dry food.
Reading all the shared stuffs here I got something that I could use.And take note this site has a well organized item here.
My pug asia is only picky when she is alone. When the other dogs are around she will try anything. She is prefers vegetable juice with here dry dog food. unless its beneful weight control. The only dry food she will scarf down plain and dry.
I don’t think so ‘coz some pets eat everything and other is not…
gillette shavers
Hmnn,, my pet is picky, that’s why I am careful in feeding her..ways to earn online
Charlie - 1.6 year is so picky! He spits out treats. The only thing he’ll eat is roasted chicken and cheddar cheese. I’ve tried everything - my vet said to try plain old canned dog food, and even that didn’t work. If forced, he’ll eat Bil-Jac but frankly I’m happy he’ll down the chicken and cheddar. Oh, another thing - I free feed him. I just put the food out there and most of the time he isn’t interested, but goes to it during the day. I tried only putting the dish down once a day, but that didn’t work. If he’s hungry, he picks up the empty bowl in his mouth, finds me and hits my ankle with it. I’m beginning to think he’s smarter than I am.
My pug did that for the first 6 months I had her . Then we moved in a house with other dogs. Now she its almost anything you give her, especially if the other dogs are eating too. It’s also been almost 2 years since i got her
