Gray Lady

Last weekend there was a fair going on at one of our favorite parks. The dogs had a lot of fun walking through the game area last year, so we thought we would try it again this year during an off-peak time (early Sunday morning). As we were making our way to the carnival area, one of the VIPs (Volunteers In Policing, because that is how we roll here in Florida) manning the road block, hollered over to us:
VIP: I bet I can guess which one is the oldest.
Me: Really (acting like I had never played this game before)
VIP: Yeah, it is this one. (pointing to Luna)
Me: Nope. It is this one (pointing to Benjamin)
Then the usual conversation ensued. But that one looks so much older, she's complete gray. So I shared Luna's story and told him that she got off to a rough start and she went gray prematurely.
If I had a dollar for every person that has come up to us when we are out and about asking how old Luna is or nearly betting their life that Luna is the oldest pug of the group, Solsey's memorial fund would have about 50 more dollars.
Appearances can be deceiving.

That is so true. Genevieve swallowed pennies when she was about 3. We had no idea how toxic they are to dogs. Luckily we got her treated in time, but it was a very slow recovery. That really did a number on her and she started turning gray soon after that.
She looks a lot older than Luke. And yes, I felt so awful that she was able to find pennies, but she used to be a climber. She would climb on top of the dresser. Little stinker.
Sweet, sweet Luna girl, you are too precious.
Look at the cute little puss though….just because it’s a bit grey doesn’t mean it isn’t smoochable! Kisses to the little missus!
Love you little Luna! She seems to be tired of the questions, too.
Pug Hug
I have to admit that I would have guessed Luna to be the oldest, too! I guess we shouldn’t go by looks ... people think my younger sister (by 2 years) is older than me! LOL!!! Of course - she raised 6 kids and I have pugs ... I guess they keep me young! :-D
No matter how old that sweet baby looks she is still very beautiful. We certainly know just how sweet and saucy you are.
That would irritate me to no end!
Not only is it insulting to a lady, does it really matter in the end??? I have always thought she was the prettiest of the your Pugs. She has these beautiful, kind eyes that just kill me!
dosent matter if Luna is gray she is still one pretty lady one of my pugs I adopted last june he was a stray my vet says he is about 5 or 6 but his face makes him look about 10 or 11 I am guessing he had a very rough life from the shape he was in but now he thinks he is king of the house and also very spoiled
Luna’s expression in her picture clearly demonstrates how little she cares about the “VIP’s” observations about her!
The way you wrote this makes me almost feel I was there, too! And how nice it was of you to allow the VIP to play his little guessing game!
It’s just because Benny Bag ‘O Wrinkles still has such a puppy mug, that lucky dog! My rescue girl has got a bit of gray on her chin too, and she’s only just over 2 years old (or so we think, anyway). She was a stray and in poor health when we got her, so I think having a rough start really can age them a bit prematurely. Fortunately, like miss Luna, she’s with us now, and we’re hoping that all the spoiling we’re doing will keep her young for as long as possible!
Little Luna’s not gray…she’s platinum blonde, and that’s why she has more fun!
I get that all the time too, ‘ooh look it’s a puppy!’ nope, indy is just really small.
I hate to say it but it does get annoying after awhile.. but oh well!
Aww, little Luna! You are so sweet. I used to answer that question about my late precious pug Ellie with “no, her hairdresser just went crazy with the gray highlights”. And now I get that with Annabelle a lot too. She went gray early…just like her dad (my husband doesn’t appreciate that comment)!
I just looked into Solsey’s “Sunshine” Memorial and saw $1,210.00. It has grown, and I hope it continues to grow. That is such a lovely tribute to such a special lady.
Luna, I have had friends with white hair before they were 21! AS for me, Gray is distinguished-I have plenty distinguished-gray hair that is! But gray or not-you are a sweetie! Here’s some extra pug-hugs from the Colorado 3 in 8 inches of pug-lovin snow!!
LOL @ Andi, I’ll bet he didn’t.
Ours is a climber, too, Brenda. She loves to eat paper and we’ve had to pug-proof. Luna is a perfect little darling and am overjoyed she’s found her forever home so filled with love and pugkin bread. :D
I would have said “Really?” as well. My 12 year old fawn girl, her face has been totally grey for years, and Mr. Benny has such a beautimous face, with no signs that he is actually older than Luna.
I must have missed this in an older blog entry, but do you know their approximate ages then?
Can’t help but say a song went through my mind because of the Gray Lady title. :D
Gray, lady, lay, lay across your big soft pillow
Gray, lady, lay, lay across your big soft pillow
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I’ll show them to you and you’ll see them shine
She looks so serene and lovely.
You are so sweet luna as you all are so precious.
No matter what anyone says, Luna rocks! She is beautiful, no matter what color she is!!!
