I think all pugs believe they are guard dogs until…that person or those people come close, and then they are there to see the pugs.

It’s not easy being a-door-able and menacing at the same time - talk about Double Duty!!!
Bella didn’t even seem to know HOW to bark until she was about 4 (she’s 6 now).  And she still sounds like a percolating coffee pot.  But because she’s black and built more like a miniature bulldog (her father was a “chesty” lad) and assumes a solid stance on her doorstep - she can be intimidating to folks unfamiliar with pugs . . . until they say hello to her and the curly tail starts to wag.  So that leaves ME as designated guard dog.

How sweet! It looks as though the boys are sitting there waiting for someone to walk by or come to the door.
I have a rescue Yellow Lab who hides behind the storage barn waiting to howl at a passerby. Everyone is on to her now as she’s been doing it for 6 years.
Thanks Mary C. for the comment about Bella not barking. I was beginning to worry because Ruby Claire hasn’t barked since I’ve brought her home. She’s now 7 months old. Best wishes to everyone for a safe and pleasant weekend.

Oh, heavens.  If not barking is the issue, just wait until Ruby Claire does start in.  I think you’ll be barking out of the other side of your, uh, mouth.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this, but do any of your pugs “chirp”?  I can’t figure out how she does it, or why, but Gracie at times will walk through the house sounding like cooing doves (that’s the only way I can describe the sound).  Shel’’ occasionally chirp when going after something to play with.  Perhaps it’s just that pugs are prone to odd noises.

Yes, my 3 think they’re Rottweilers in pug suits. I figure if anyone hears all that racket, they’ll think twice about trying to get into my house!!!!

Huckle:  I would LOVE to hear a chirping pug.
I had a cat named Chevy Chase (long time ago SNL fan) who WHIRRRPED with a bit of a rolling r-sound which was so charming - until she started leaving kitty turds on my son’s bed.  She went to a co-worker who had lots of cats and a small acreage. Chevy was born an “outside” cat - so maybe that was her way of telling us she needed more “nature” in her lifestyle than the litter box afforded her.
And while Bella doesn’t bark much at people coming to the door - she does stand by the door and BARK at me @ 3 a.m. most mornings to be let outside - she sometimes will sit in the doorway between the kitchen and living room and bark - telling me to get up and get her something to eat.  That usually doesn’t work - but she doesn’t have a lot to do some days - so she gives it a whirl.

Ivy:  Your “Rottweilers in Pug Suits” made me think of the movie, MEN IN BLACK for some reason (there was a pug in that movie, but not in a suit - could be an idea for a new Pug movie though!!  Such a funny image! Thnx for the chuckle!

Huckle: I don’t know if it is a chirp or a clucking sound, but my daughter’s Pug, Cha-Cha, made sounds like that. He was one very spoiled Pug-boy (he passed 2 years ago) and he didn’t like to be alone for one minute. When he was alone he would chip or cluck. Maybe both. We are one Pug-crazy family and lovers of all animals!

My first two pugs, Maggie and Lucy, rarely barked.  Then baby Daphne came on the scene—major alpha pug—and she assumed the neglected barking duties which Maggie and Lucy couldn’t be bothered with.  Later we acquired Opal from Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue, who is a very shy little lady.  One day, while dishing out their lunch, I heard this little warble—could it be darling Opal?  Daphne was just impatiently sitting there, stone silent.  Yes, sweet little Opal was speaking!  5 months later we welcomed Miss Uma from MAPR.  Flash forward to the present day, when I serve their meals, Daphne’s silent and the rescue pugs are going crazy, barking and bouncing off the walls.  My own damned fault!  Be careful of what you consider to be cute—it may come back to haunt you, again and again and again. . .

I think Henry and Benjamin always consider that they’re a team and that they really enjoy having each other as a partner.

And if they ever watch police shows on TV, then they really understand that’s how it’s supposed to work!!!

MARTHA:  Might you be thinking of “Barksy & Hootch”?? - sorry . . . that was just dumb.

Ohhhhhhhhh Mary, you must keep yourself amused all day!  “Barksy & Hootch”  That’s a good one.,although you are sleep deprived, 3 a.m., ouch. I guess you’re kinda slap happy.  (Now I said this in all good humor.)

I love hearing how our pugs can be so different, yet so alike.

Lol, well we have two watch dogs here now. Tux hasn’t quite caught on to hearing it yet, but Lilo knows the instant someone pulls into the drive and is at the front door barking. She also knows the sound of her doggy daddy’s truck, my brother’s truck and my dad’s truck - all of which elicit slightly different responses. (mostly bc it takes Grampa longer to get to the door lol).

Tux has just found his big boy bark, but doesn’t use it to often. Oh and he’s also discovered his tail and his reflection in the glass in my tv stand. So he growls and barks at himself. He’s so funny.

We’ve been working on the barking with Lilo ( at stupid things lately ), and the biting with Tux with a water bottle pretty steady for the last week and it seems to be making a difference. I don’t mind Lilo barking at animals on tv and people coming to the house, but now she barks at the music leading into the evening news. Well at least until the last couple of nights. She hasn’t even growled at it.

As far as the chirping, I don’t get that, or even a whine when I come home, but rather a tongue lashing. I think I might have posted it on my fb account. It’s insane and it just started this past summer. Now Tux is doing it too! Oh well, it’s good to be loved!!
