Benny’s Post Dental Update
First, I want to apologize for not updating you all before now. I hope no one was worried....
Second, I want to warn those that have a weak stomach not to scroll all the way down as I have included the before & after photos from Benny's procedure. In the photos you will see that his teeth were yucky in the before pick and cleaned up in the after shot. But the squeamish part is where it is clear to see that he is intubated. If that will make you nervous to see, don't peek.
So, Benjamin had his dental cleaning and it really went a lot better than I had hoped for! Since I know how anxious he gets and so as to shorten the length of time that he had a rumbly in his tummy (to quote Winnie the Pooh) I had asked if he could be first. This was indeed possible. I had to drop him around 7:30 AM. By 9:30 AM I was already getting the phone call saying that he was in recovery. Wow! That was quick! I was so happy to have it be all done that early in the day.
They shared that they had to remove 3 teeth altogether. As you can see below. One was pretty discolored and the other two were causing problems since his gums had receded to expose the nerves. So, out they had to come. I am not sure who has had to have more teeth pulled (or have naturally fallen out) Ben or Luna. I think at this point it is really too close to call. Henry hasn't needed to have hardly any teeth (if any at all) come out. I truly think that it has something to do with the size of the pug. Since Henry is bigger and has a larger head, I think that helps accommodate the teeth in his mouth. The smaller the head, the more compressed the teeth have to be in that little noggin. They all start with the same number of teeth right? Makes sense to me, but I am no vet. (I merely play one at home.)

The most wonderful thing about this experience this time is how easily Benjamin came out of the anaesthetic. When they called me at 9:30 they said he was already alert an looking around. Then they called again around 1:00 and they were like, uh, Benny's ready to go home! (Pick up time is typically 3:30-4) but it sounded like he was already bouncing off the walls! I was happy that he all awake and bubbly but I was still working. Yikes! But what better excuse to have to leave for a short day than to take care of my Baby Benny.

Awww, Baby Ben - sounds like you had a successful surgery and were on the mend quick as could be, YAY! It is so wonderful to hear how quickly you “came to” and now your mouth is tidy and clean! BIG post-dentist (lol) kiss to you sweet boy!
Yay, Bennie! That anaesthetic always freaks me out when Lola has her teeth done. Alas, it is the curse of being a pug. Lola has had a few teeth out over the course of her 6 years. I can’t imagine what state her mouth would be in if I didn’t brush her teeth every night!
Kisses for your recovery, Benjamin!
you did an awesome job for the dentist/vet Benny!!
I am not a fan of the dentist, so I know how it feels… being all nervous and panicky!
Hugs and kisses for recovery and maybe you will get some pugkin bread soon!
xoxo
Good job Bens! Now you will have a sparkling smile and fresh breath for your family members to delight at!
So glad to hear you did good Benny! And ready to go by 1:00. I love it! Extra kisses for Baby Benny! And Looney and Henry too..cupid too!
Hellen ~ Any word on Peanut? God Bless.
Pug Hugs to all from Gina & Pip
Aww Baby Benny . . . bless you, handsome. I just went in to have eight teeth removed (with a lingering infection, so the darn Novacaine didn’t numb me right). But bouncing around and ready to go by 1:00? That just shows strength of will, and how much stronger you are than us silly humans. *smiles* Such pretty teeth now, too!
Big hugs from Taj & Minx
I am so glad to hear all went well with the dental and Bennys teeth look nice and pearly white three of mine have gone in to have dentals in the last few months and boy what a difference Zeke was the only one that had to have one come out
Oh, my gosh, what shining white teeth. Perhaps he has a future in advertising white teeth for a toothpaste company. He doesn’t have to mention the dentist polished him up.
Those are odd looking teeth that were pulled. I expected to see more human-like ones.
What a little trooper he was. Love ya’ Benny.
Glad to see the difference in the before and after. That really was a difference (wish my teeth were that white - oh, that’s right, I don’t have any). What did you have to feed the little man after he got home.
Pat’s right, Pugkin Bread is in order…“hey, Bob Evans…” NOW!
WOW, what a difference…those teeth sparkle. Sorry you had to lose three Baby Benny, but I have never known that to stop a pug. Also, good news that you had an easy time with the anesthesia. That is always the biggest worry.
Wish I could brush Romeo’s teeth, but that would be like trying to pet a raging bull, literally.
Congrats on such a successful dental visit Benny! What a trooper!
Makes me think I should get our little guy in for a cleaning. He hates getting his teeth done so much I think he’d rather be neutered again than have his teeth brushed by me or professionally cleaned…
Oh Benny we (including you) are so happy your done with teeth problems for awhile. I always loved your sweet face and smile before and now WOW!!!!
No word about Peanut. Everytime I hear a sound I go to the front door and look out. Make Alex go out back (no ramp..Grannie cannot get out there).
I have been thinking of putting a small add with picture of him.
Anyone like to crochet baby items??? I thought I had ordered ONE BOOK, but instead had checked SIX. They are books of baby crochet Booties. Will be happy to mail them out until they are gone!! Will need address.
Helen, I’m so so sad about your Peanut…Still thinking of you both and prayers still going up for his safe return!!
I was a bad pug momma and never got Sleighbelle used to having her teeth brushed. My next pug will suffer the results of that and she or he will get a brushing each week. I am worried to put my almost 14 year old (Oct 26 will be her 14th birthday) under the gas. My vet says that it is safe, what do y’all have to say about it?
Tracy, what a good one! LOL
Sue VDB, I can relate. I can’t even hold onto Abby when I get near her mouth. I try (sigh). I hesitate to take these guys to have a teeth cleaning. Heck, I don’t even know if they have teeth.
Sleighbelle, I can identify. Baxter is going to be 13 the day after Christmas and, so far, I’m pretty adamant about not putting him under for just a teeth cleaning. This is of course exacerbated by the trauma I experienced when Riley passed away (won’t go into details about how it relates), but I honestly don’t think I will do it. That’s just me though…My vet also assures it’s totally safe and he’d be fine; my momma instinct just tells me the benefits don’t outweigh the risks, for now…
As a woman and pug momma, I reserve the right to change my opinion at any time. LOL LOL
Just realized that I didn’t say why I was hesitant on a tooth cleaning. It was because I didn’t want Abby to be put under and that would be the ONLY way she could have it. Instead, I give them all lots of tartar reducing treats and cross my fingers.
Sleighbelle, it really all depends on the pug. Some can sail right through it and others can’t. If you really trust your vet then it may be ok; if not, not sure I would do it. I do know that bad teeth can really affect their health.
Pip really needs his teeth cleaned but I am so scared to put him under to do it. I try to brush at home but it isn’t very successful. I’m with you Huckle, I just give tarter reducing treats and cross my fingers.
Still praying Hellen. God Bless!
