My female NEVER barks when she wants something from us. Our Male will cry or bark when there is something that he wants and we aren’t getting it for him.. but not the female..
Her way of reminding us to get her something is to VERY SILENTLY follow us around until we remember whatever it is she wants us to do..

My girls are very different from each other, vocally.  Miko hardly ever barks - just when she’s really excited or nervous about a noise or something (like a watchdog), but Meimei is a barker.  She barks at everything. To get attention, because she’s excited, because she wants something, because a breeze in the wind crossed by….

I think it’s a personal thing, maybe not just a girl thing

Sukey will bark at strangers (and if I crumble the chip bag closed) but she isn’t much of a indoor barker. She does come and sit real close when I have fruit or veggies and do “pug snort talk”. So she is very vocal in that sense.

Charlie, our visually impaired pug, does the same type of barking (“talking”). He NEVER barks when the doorbell rings or at the birds (as his brother, Toby, does)... only when I am preparing their meals, we are eating, or when trying to coax his brothers to “rumble”.

Perhaps… it is related to Luna’s visual impairment?

My pug, Abbey (8 months old), barks at the opposite of Luna.  People, other dogs, cars, and anything/everything that moves.  She never barks at her brother(11-year-old lab), but does bark at her sister(tabby cat).  However, that’s probably because the cat is the only one who will tolerate her.  So, my conclusion is that to me it does not look like a female thing.  Or maybe Abbey is a bit off…

I think it might be a little Luna thing.  Adrian doesn’t bark at all when she wants some of what we’re eating.  If we’re at the table, she stands on her hind legs with her front paws on my leg and stares at me until I “fall for the fur.”  If I’m snacking on the sofa in front of the TV, she’ll sit facing me (about 6 inches away)and staring me down on the sofa with her front legs draped across my leg until, once again, I “fall for the fur.”

The only barking from both of them is when they’re sitting on the landing and can see outside.  Then when anyone walks by, the howling begins.  They both think they’re part coyote!

Rocky occasionally barks when he smells something absolutely irresistible (like chicken).

In my household it is the exact opposite…my two young boys, Flynn and Jessie, are the barkers…when they want in, when they want food, when they want attention…when the door bell rings on the pizza commercial.  Julia, my Head Pug and Household Queen, rarely barks.  She just fixes her targets with a steely stare that automatically bends them to her will.  Either that or she takes a toy in her mouth and does a phenomenal imitation of a crying puppy.  Gets us every time.

My little girl, Chelsea, would bark at strangers walking by the house, anything with a heavy engine (garbage trucks and vacuumm cleaners especially), the doorbell and thunder.  Otherwise, she was really quiet, and would just stare at me when she wanted something.  She would also sit in front of the pantry door and just stare at it hoping it would open.

You might be on to something.  I never thought about the fact that her vision might play a part.

My wee Lola barks at absolutely everything.

Everything.

She barks at me only in ultimate frustration or stress.

Her “I want my dinner” tactic is to sit about 6 feet away from me and stare at me, but everything else…BARK! BARK! BARK!

My fond memories of Apple.

Apple used to stand on her hind legs with her front paws clawing on my legs if she wan something from the table. she will let out a tinniest bark if she had been waiting long enough without response from me.

Apple would bark at strangers too, three barks only, n then she will lose interest. Cute!

my Nic Nic, she will bark at everything since she is a loud minpin.

My little girl pug Daisy is also quiet until she wants something usually just to play or give her attention but that is the only time we hear her bark.  We hear it so rarely that her bark is real cute to us because her older brother Orbit just does not stay quiet.

I don’t have a little girl but Frank is very very vocal.  Not just barking either!  He whines and mumbles and has something to say about everything.

Ruby will do whatever she has to in order to get our attention or what she wants.  Sometimes that is looking sad and squishy, sometimes that is tsking, mmmmmfing, or barking.

She was always vocal but didn’t start the barking until she stayed with two other (rather yappy) dogs.  She found her bark then .

I don’t think it is a girl pug thing, rather than an attitude thing.  After all, she IS a princess.

My Sweet Pea barks at some of the people she sees, from the balcony. No rhyme nor reason as to whom she’s decided is in her territory. In person, not a peep from her. I’ve noticed her parents are pretty much the same.

Indoors, she only barks one or two sharp barks, for extremely favorite foods.  Sweet Pea becomes absolutely frantic for KFC (meat, no skin, o’course).
