Pug Dog Encephalitis Resource

For all of us who rescue those pugs and love them no matter what   I salute you and my pugs   well they are relaxing but they say thank you also. From one rescue mom to you all I thank you for loving the breed.

Our pug just started acting ” different” and having the symtoms of pug dog encepalitis. Is there any good websites that I can look at for some information ?

My pug Rocky just came down with PDE I was so surprised how fast it hit and how little is known about it. 23 days into this disease and he is in terrible shape. the vet first thought it was just epilisy. by day 2 the other symptoms appeared circling, head pressing and blindness in 1 eye. he is at home now but is not expected to last very long as the meds aren’t controlling the seizures well i will miss him very very much.

We lost our sweet Bentley this morning after being diagnosed with pug encephalitis just hours before.  He went from a happy fun loving puppy to a dog that couldn’t walk or stand and was in severe pain. 

This is a terrible disease for the wonderful loving animials

My little guy, Tiny Tim just suddenly came down with PDE the other day, and I had to have him put to sleep, all in one day.  If he showed any symptoms before, I didn’t notice them.  We loved him and miss him, but I have a real problem, because he is the father of a litter of pups that are going to be born this coming week.  He’s also fathered two other litters.  I feel really bad about it, and hope the people they went to won’t have to go through it with their doggies.  Don’t really know what I should do with the babies that are coming!  Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Hi, I’m new to this site and wondering if anyone could tell me if what my dog is experiencing is congruent with PDE.  The vets think it is, but it doesn’t seem to completely identify with the symptoms .  She has not had any seizures,but within two months she has had two episodes where she had difficulty walking (dizzy acting), was incontinent with urine, and bobbed her head.  Both times she was treated with steroids and responded well.  Any ideas?

We have lost our beloved Zazie-baby three weeks ago.. PDE took her from us very rapidly: she was dead within 24 hrs!

I’m afraid, Derrick, that the symptoms you describe are very much resemble the ones we had to see in the first 3 hrs and then everything went from bad to worse… The whole thing is so surreal and painful… All you can do now is to contribute to the research and perhaps you can help to detect the cause of PDE. I wish I didn’t have to write all these to you…

I lost my pug Stormy of Pug Dog Encephalitis
on 10/10/07. She was 1 year and 11 months old. It has been such a hard thing to get thru. She got so sick so fast. It took a very long time to get a diagnosis due to the fact most of the tests come back normal. We spent over $5000 trying to save her life to no avail. So that her dead wasn’t in vain we opted to have slides of her brain taken. So along with the MRIs, blood work etc. maybe they can help find a cure for this devastating illness. We lost our little girl, Pugzy 2 days ago to Pug Encephalitis.  Originally we thought she hurt her back and the Vet put her on steriods oral steroids after 3 injections, she got better for a week and a few days, but once the oral steroids wore off, she went downhill fast.  She passed away at the Vets office 5 minutes or so before we got there.  He thought she was poisoned by some insecticide, but we think it was PE.  She responded with steroids for a limited time, and she displayed all the symptoms, lazness, lameness(abnormal walk), apparent blindness, seizures, circling, vacant expressions, and pressing her head against things.  This all happened very fast once she was off the steroids, she went from moderatley ok to death with in 24 hours.  It’s a terrible disease and I miss my little girl so much I can barely stand it.

I have a four month old pug that recently started displaying odd behavior. She began to pace, drool excessively, run into walls, furniture, attack and bark at inanimate objects. I was just wondering if she was too young to be diagnosed with PDE. We went to the Vet and found she had a high temp. and very high liver enzymes. She was put on an antibiotic and now displays those behaviors very rarely. Maybe just for a few minutes when she gets worked up. What do you think? Do you think that she could have PDE? Is she too young.

I have just read everybody’s comments. My sweet pug baby, Miso died just yesterday, from what had to be PDE. Her birthday was 8-20-06, so she was not even 2 years old. It is such a sad a lonely feeling, seeing your best friend go so quickly. We thought she had hurt her back too, she did not want to jump off furniture, was super lethargic, and just not herself. So after a day of treating her for her back, her neck became very stiff, and then she could hardly walk, as all her limbs were limp. She kept going potty in her crate for a couple days, as well as not eating or drinking, and her health declined so quickly. Then she began having seizures, she had 7 in about 2 hours. The next day, we got to take her home from the vet and have one last good snuggle. When we were snuggling, she began having sever difficulties breathing, like she was hacking and coughing. thick drooling. It was just like that. Everything reminds me of her, every time I hear a noise i expect her to look or move, it is so painful but I am just glad she did not have to suffer for long. She was my very best friend, and I feel for everybody who has/is/will go through this. I love my Miso baby, she is my pug angel and now I get to be with her everyday, everywhere I go, as she will always be in my heart.

My pug, Franky was diagnosed with pug encephalitis a few months ago. when she has seivures she drools, doesnt use her back legs to walk, she just drags them behind and after she is angry at everyone it is so hard to watch!

I have a pug named abbie shes about 2.5 years old and 2 days ago she had a very werid thing happen to her her head went down she started to breath heavy and her back rose up she did it twice in one day has’nt done it since. put i fear the worst for this pug she can’t really hear anymore but we knew since we took her in for her frist check up that her ears were very bad. so sympthons are that she seemed to pace around hunch back and hard breathing neck seemed to be inflamed also.

I’ve always been a big dog lover until my wife convinced me to pruchase Winston.  We now have 3 Pugs and they have totally captured my heart for all the reasons you know.  One of the Pugs, Baxter showed seizure symptoms 2 days ago.  We learned it is PDE and are absolutely heartbroken to put him down to avoid severe pain & poor quaity of life in his final days.  The solution will come in education and research support.  Stay involved and informed against this wicked disease.

My baby D.D. is not doing well. She has had 2 seizures and is in puppy ICU. She is 1 and 1/2 years old. I am hoping for the best, but am very scared that it is PDE.  I will know more tomorrow. How can this be!.....
