The consumption of just a few teaspoons of antifreeze can have deadly results for pets and even small children. Part of the problem with antifreeze is that it is primarily composed of ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol has a very sweet smell and is very inviting to pets and children. So chances are if your pug stumbles across a puddle or an open bottle of antifreeze it will be enticed to drink it.
Antifreeze poisoning is such a serious threat that several states have passed laws that require the manufacturers of antifreeze to add bittering agents so that the ethylene glycol become less appealing to pets and children. While this is a step in the right direction, many states have failed to pass similiar laws because of the potentional costs to manufacturers.
This may all change, however, if the federal Antifreeze Bittering Act of 2005 is passed.

During lulls in the big game, be sure to check out the Puppy Bowl II on Animal Planet. The Puppy Bowl features a variety of different puppy breeds all romping in a football themed pen.
I watched bits and pieces of this last year and it was quite amusing. My favorite was the water bowl cam. This year’s game even features a kitten half-time show!

As pug owners we know that pugs can make a lot of different noises, but can they actually laugh? A new study by researchers at the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service says that dogs do indeed laugh and their laugh is a long, loud panting sound.
It also seems like a dog’s laugh is contagious because other dogs are soothed and calmed by the sound of another dog laughing.

In 2004, Maddie the pug was vacationing in Florida from Albany, NY visiting her grandmom. Maddie’s vacation was going well until the family heard that hurricane Charley had taken an unexpected turn and was heading for Central Florida. While waiting out the storm the family turned to Dr. Seuss books to help pass the time. This gave Amy Allinson, Maddie’s grandmom, a great idea for a book and she started writing her own book about a hurricane from the viewpoint of a pug. Amy worked closely with her son Matt and her daughter Kate and before long their book was complete.
Their book, entitled Maddie’s Great Adventure is available from Trafford Publishing for $12. Unfortunately, Trafford Publishing does not allow you to directly link to a book, so to view the book’s synopsis and to see some of the book’s illustrations you need to go to the Trafford Publishing home page and then enter the book’s title in the Quick Search box.

PugFest 2005 held at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in Georgia was quite an event. There were around 700 pugs in attendace with about 1400 of their human companions. The event raised more than $14,000 for the Southeast Pug Rescue & Adoption, Inc.
The funds raised will be used to care for pugs rescued by SERPA and for administrative fees.
Dexter, a 6 year old pug from Gainesville, GA had a great time at the event. Dexter took home the honor of “Best Kisser” in one of the many contests held at the event.

For the fourth consecutive year, pugs will be marching in the annual Bentonville Christmas Parade. In previous years the pugs, dressed in costumes, have always been crowd favorites. Many of the pugs participating in the parade are currently looking for homes and are available for adoption from Pug Rescue of Northwest Arkansas.
