The Magical Charm of Pugs

With 601 members Philly is home to the third largest pug meetup group, ranking only behind pug meetup groups in New York and Austin, Texas.  A local Philly paper tries to understand how the charming personality of the pug inspires owners to pamper, dress and seek the companionship of other owners like no other dog breed.

The magical qualities of a pug is tough to explain and I don’t think anyone truly understands until they have had the joy of being owned by a pug.

Meet other pug lovers at the Pug Parliament

The fourth Pug Parliament “Pug Fun in the Sun” event will be held Saturday,  May 20th 2006 at 2 pm in Overland Park, KS.

This is an opportunity for Pugs and their owners living in the greater Kansas City area to meet, discuss health and breed issues as well as training and socialization. In turn, we hope to promote good health and breeding practices, and overall Pug awareness and information. We would also like to raise more awareness to the concept of Pug Rescue.

For more information, please contact Mary Crissman at (913) 403-8009 or pugspeak@sbcglobal.net.

Go Orange on April 10th

On April 10th the ASPCA will be celebrating its 140th anniversary.  To help the ASPCA celebrate many buildings in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles will be illuminated in orange on April 10th.

If you don’t live in the Big Apple or the Windy City don’t worry you can still help the ASPCA celebrate such an incredible milestone.  The first 20 people to send us a picture of their pug wearing orange will receive an ASPCA orange wristband.  You can send your entries to puglines@ownedbypugs.com.  Please limit submissions to one entry per family.  Also, please be sure to add the e-mail address puglines@ownedbypugs.com to your address books so that if we contact you as a winner our e-mail will not be gobbled up by any spam filters.

Be sure to check out the ASPCA’s photo gallery of pets and humans going orange to help celebrate the ASPCA’s anniversary as well.

Google’s Top Pug

Google is well known for having quite a different work environment than many other companies.  Googlers enjoy many perks and one of them is being able to bring their dog(s) to work with them.  One dog that enjoys his visits to the Googleplex is Nickey the pug.  Nickey recently shared what is like working at Google in a recent post on the Google Blog.

It may seem silly to some, but birthday parties are no longer just for humans.  Spoiled pooches are now getting in on the fun and celebrating their special day by surrounding themselves with their closest human and canine friends.

If you want to throw your pug a party, check out some of these party resources:

A Great Read - Marley & Me

I was at the airport recently waiting for a flight so I stopped into a bookstore in hopes to find something good to read to help pass the time. While browsing the shelves, I came across Marley & Me by John Grogan. I have heard a lot of good things about his book so I decided to buy it.

I made my way over to my gate, sat down and cracked open the book. I was only about 10 pages in when I found myself smirking and thinking to myself, “I know exactly what he is talking about!” By the time I boarded the plane and got settled with my inflight snack I was laughing out loud. Towards the end of my flight, there was a tear in my eye.

Marley & Me is a fantastic book that truly captures the ups and downs of life with a dog at your side. While Marley is not a pug, I found myself shaking my head numerous times easily relating to Marley’s many antics thinking to myself, “That sounds just like Benny” or “Henry did that just the other day!”

A great summer read!

Pug Lovers save Buck the pug

Colleen Bighley was recently faced with one of a pug parent’s worst nightmares. Her two year old pug, Buck, darted from the house and was hit by a car. Buck suffered 3 broken legs and needed to have a costly surgery.

The required surgery was $3000 and Collen Bighley was worried she would not be able to come up with the money. She shared Buck’s story on a popular pug website where she normally shared pictures of Buck and her other pugs. She told her fellow pug lovers that her family could not afford Buck’s surgery and she was going to bring Buck home and spend one more night with him before he would be put to sleep.

Fourteen minutes after sharing her story on the popular website, fellow pug lovers replied stating they would donate money to help save Buck. Donations came from around the world and Collen was able to pay for Buck’s surgery.

Buck hasn’t made a full recovery yet, but he has had his surgery and is getting better each day.

Pugs and pug people are simply the greatest!
