Wrinkles

Benny resting his wrinkles

My tweet about wrinkle cleaning sparked some discussions about cleaning wrinkles in the comments of this week’s Caption This so I thought I would elaborate a bit with today’s post.

Out of the three, Benjamin has the worst wrinkles.  His wrinkles are constantly dirty and have to be cleaned daily.  If I am really on the ball, I will clean them twice a day, but most of the time they only get cleaned once a day.  Henry & Luna on the other hand get their wrinkles wiped out about once a week.

I can’t really say why Benjamin’s wrinkles get so much dirtier than the others.  His folds are much deeper than the others so that may have something to do with it.  He also always has his head stuck somewhere.  In the grass or dirt as he is smelling and he also likes to prop himself up on his head so that he can use both of his front paws to scratch on his pillows (been trying to get a video of this for a long time).

To clean his wrinkles we use malacetic wipes.  The vet recommended them to us a few years ago and they seem to work OK.  They definitely get the dirt out.  We used to get them from our vet in Maryland, but the last few times we have ordered them online.  Other than the malacetic wipes we just try and keep Benny’s wrinkles as dry as possible so his folds aren’t a breeding ground for yeast.

Luckily, Benjamin is a good boy about letting me clean his wrinkles.  We keep the malacetic wipes in the kitchen, so as soon as I go to get one he follows me into the kitchen and stands next to me gazing up hoping to get a treat.  He knows the sound of the wipe container and when I open the container his little tail uncurls.  It’s so sad!  He doesn’t run away, he just stands there and looks at me like, “Let’s get this over with”.  It just breaks my heart.  But, he soon forgets all about it when he gets his treat.

What about you?  What do you use to clean your pug’s wrinkles?  I would love to hear your tips as I am always looking for something to help keep Benny’s face clean.

Lola's Mum

My wee Lola also has a very deep “stinkle” that needs to be dry cleaned (dry kleenex) twice a day - she gets a deep cleaning twice a week with cotton pads and Epi-Otic fluid (vet recommended). Unfortunately, Lola is 14 pounds of raw, squirming power, and she HATES her Epi-Otic wrinkle cleanings, so it takes both myself and a pug friend to do the deed, otherwise I would definitely do it more often.

Good boy Bennie for letting your Mum clean your stinkle! It is the price of beauty, my dear….

I use the alcohol-free baby wipes.  They work really well on my Sam’s wrinkles!

Miko is the same as Benny - I have to clean out her wrinkles everyday so that they don’t get yeasty and she gets really itchy.  I use non-alcohol Witchhazel, which we can pick up at the pharmacy or health food store.  It’s a natural drying agent and keeps her clean and moisturized.  It’s cheap too - cause I use cotton pads to put it on her.

Miko doesn’t like it either - she is super good for it though, she will stay sitting when she sees the cotton pad, but will turn her head away, also with a straight tail.

They are such sweeties, aren’t they!

While giving this photo a second look, I noticed those CLAWS!  Wow!  I guess they look much longer because they seem to be very slender.  Being the attentive mom you are, I know you don’t ignore nail clipping.  Are they that much longer than the other pugs as they appear?

Benny is definitely due for a toenail clipping.  His nails grow so fast so they usually are longer than Henry & Luna’s.

I have decided that a lot of what’s in C.J. and Toeby’s wrinkles come from their tear ducts.  C.J. will actually tear up when he’s anticipating a treat and his face ends up wet!  He loves his treats!  I also use Kleenex for eye “boogies” and baby wipes for the deep cleaning.  My guys are pretty good about it but they really don’t like it.  Cleaning ears?  That’s a whole other battle!!!

I just discovered the BEST THING for wrinkle cleaning!  Ruby gets a stinky nose wrinkle (smells like an old dishcloth LOL).  I would dab with a kleenex to keep it dry and torture her with cotton and some cleaning stuff from the vet as often as I felt strong enough (talk about a battle!).

Out of desperation I put her on the bathroom counter, and used a microfiber cloth moistened with just a bit of warm water (wrung out well).  Not only did it really grab the dirt in there, but she squirmed less and it seemed really dry when I was done.  And her face smelled nice and clean for TWO WHOLE DAYS.

So now, every day I give her nose roll and the folds under her eyes a quick swipe with the microfiber cloth, then use the other side to give her a quick wipe down from head to tail.  She looks shinier, her face smells cleaner, and the best part?  No chemicals or medicated stuff!

I have had at least one pug in my household since 1963.  I have always inspected their wrinkles, but I have been very fortunate.  None of my precious babies -  Puggy, Tiger, BoPeep and Romeo have had exceptionaly clean wrinkles.

I am lucky that Gus and Indy don’t have really deep wrinkles (Indy barely has any). I usually just use a damp washcloth.
For eye boogies, I use my hands (I know..) and wipe it on my jeans. Lately at the end of the day I am covered in god knows what anyways… lol
Benny’s face looks like velvet.. is it super soft?

Eeeeeww Lex!  I have a thing about the eye boogies and I just can’t use my hands!  My husband does that and it completely unnerves me!!

To Dances in Garden:  Wow!  Who knew!  I can have shiny stainless and black appliances AND shiny pugs!  Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely try it!

Instead of “none”, I should have said “all” my babies have had exceptionally clean wrinkles. I didn’t proofread very well.

I LOVE “stinkles” and “dry cleaned”...hahahaha…

I do a mixture of warm face clothes…momma’s nails to scrape away the dried gook…wrinkle anitbiotic cream from the vet when it gets really raw…

Now ears, don’t even get me started on ears…talk about a constant battle…

FLOSS…Re: your twitter…Riley LOVES floss…only the peppermint kind though…just as much as he loves minty fresh toothpaste breath.  I get licked for a straight 5 minutes in bed at night after brushing…If he could lick it right off my brush, he would (OK..maaaaaybe every once in a blue moon he gets a teeny tiny little lick…)

I use malacetic wipes on Willow and Belle too. I have to clean Belle’s fold each day. She gets all sorts of gunk and junk in there. I like the smell of the Malacetic wipes. They smell like Apple and Oak I think…

I also use malacetic wipes on Wilson’s wrinkle, about once a week and haven’t yet had to do anything with Henry’s. The wipes work very well, but I also see a lot of other great suggestions that I may have to try. He really hates the wipes, even knowing treats are in store he’s still a wiggly whiney mess.

When I had just Lucy, her wrinkles would get dirty and red sometimes.  She hated them being cleaned and I tried to keep up with her.  I felt so bad when they would get red.  Then we got Tuffy and he cleans her face everyday.  Since then she has never had a problem with her wrinkles.  It’s so sweet.  I clean their wrinkles now when they get a bath or when they’ve been playing in the dirt.  Tuffy’s wrinkles never seem to get dirty either, but I never see Lucy cleaning him.

I have a 15 week old black pug named Bailey.  I give his face a general wipe every morning with a warm wash rag.I clean up the eye boogers all day with either my finger or a paper towel. So far everything has just been preventative….but I have heard that a lot of people have had problems with the folds and dirt or infection. What should I be on the alert for?

Corrine - OBP

05/02/2008

Stephanie - If you are cleaning everyday you should be in good shape.  If the wrinkles get irritated they get a little red.  This may be hard to notice on a black pug, though.  Also, Bailey will likely start to scratch his face a lot and you may even notice him rubbing his face on your leg or other things trying to get a little relief.

WOW! Thank you for posting this! I have been trying for 11 years to get his “stinkle” (now that is hysterical - love it) clean. I have tried everything. My Benee doesn’t mind cause he knows once it’s over he gets a cookie and sometimes he’s running for the kitchen before I am done! LOL!
D.I.G - I am DEFINITELY going to try the micro-fiber cloth!

We have not had problems with Brandy, but I noticed her folds are different from a lot of pugs I see. Her fold does not go over her nose like most. She has folds under the eyes that go up around her eye, but her little nose is not covered. Her forhead wrinkles are not deep like Benny’s. We got an “easy care wrinkle release” pug grin

I love these posts! We just got a new baby, Edward, he’s also 15 weeks old, like Bailey but fawn. Lola has easy clean wrinkle and Grace (my black pug who turned out to be only half pug) has only the suggestion of a wrinkle——but Edward! Wrinkle city! And he does NOT want me to mess with them. I’m putting microfiber on my list.
Oh you guys, I wish you could see Edward,he’s the sweetest boy and the puggiest pug we have. He’s a kisser and a real snuggler.
Love you all!

We have just notcied our Pug Toni, has a lot of yellw and gunk in her wrinkle above her nose.  I keep cleaning daily, but it seems to really bother her, we feel terrible, but want to knwo what will work best to get it all clean and keep it that way.  Should I take her to the vet?

Our youngest Rosie has very deep wrinkles under her eyes that tend to get red and irritated. She is a very “teary” pug and I think this is why she is prone to the irritation. Right now we use dry kleenex because her face is so moist and we don’t want to add more moisture by using baby wipes. How can we tell if it is an infection that needs to be treated by the vet or just red from the moisture being stuck in the wrinkle?

I use baby wipes on Maggie & Brutus - Mags has deeper wrinkles and always get gunk in them, but the baby wipes really work well on them - Brutus’ face doesn’t get as messy - I also use the baby wipes to wipe out their ears - Brutus’ ears are worse - am now trying Diamond Lamb & Rice on them to see if they were maybe alergic to the chicken formulas - maybe that will clear up Brutus’ ears -

If you use witch hazel to clean the pug’s nose roll(on a cotton ball), you won’t have any brown stuff and it will even clean any brown stains. You don’t have to clean the pug’s nose roll very often if you use witch hazel.  It is just fantastic!!!

I have a 2 year old pug named preston, he hasn’t had any problems with the nose wrinkles until now.I noticed that it was kinda red and had a smell to it, so I started cleaning and now there is a very raw spot in the wrinkle. Please someone let me now what I can use on it to clear this up. I feel so bad that this is happening to him.

My 11 year old male pug, Buster, had problems with his nose smelling and staying raw until about 3 years ago.  If I didn’t clean every day, it would become very irritated. I bought a set of Natural Care Veterinarian’s Best Ear Relief Wash and Ear Relief Dry for his ears.  It worked so well, I tried a small amount of it on his nose.  It made an immediate noticeable difference.  Now, he actually has hair in his nose crease and never has the black tarry build up. The best part is, I only use it a few times each month, so he doesn’t have to go through the nose cleaning procedure every day!

Some pugs (and dogs) are “yeasty” (prone to yeast infections) in these folds. I battled this for 8 years with my one pug (my other pug had no issues), until I finally happened on a site that mentioned yeast infection as the culprit. 1 year ago I switched my pug’s food to a food that did not have any sugars / corn / wheat / or potatoes in it (sweet potatoes are good, but regular potatoes are yeasty. Initially I wiped her nose fold with eye wash 2 x per day.

With those small changes, her nose cleared up (from red and raw to fur-covered and healthy!) within a few weeks and has remained healthy since. I only clean her nose fold a few times a week now (with eye wash).

I’ve also read that Malaseb flush (liquid you get it online) is also a good liquid to wipe the folds with. But I’ve found that without a change in diet (no sugar / wheat / potato / corn) the raw, itchy, stinky nose comes back.
