Wise Guy

Henry

Yesterday evening, I needed to get a picture of each one of the pugs for the back cover of the calendar. The sun was quickly setting, so I was a bit rushed and this is what Henry gave me. Sitting was just a bit too much trouble for him. He just fell over, rolled on his back and was like, "will this work?"

Oh, Hank!

Have a good weekend everyone. I am planning on sending the calendar to the printer on Sunday. I should have a better estimate on when the calendars will be available for sale by the middle of next week.

What a great picture for the back of the calendar.  Through all your silliness you sweet self also shines through.

Happy Halloween, and don’t let those babies escape when you answer the door, and don’t let them eat those treats.

Isn’t that the cutest picture ever.  Henry, you have outdone yourself.

This is our cat, Huckleberry’s, favorite posture and it still just cracks us up.  Guess it’s not just ‘a cat thing’?

Have a great weekend, kids…I’m off to buy bags of candy to ruin the neighborhood kids’ teeth.  What can I say, I’m all heart!:)

Henry~you are so cute! I love the smile!

Martha~Pip might have thought about lifting his leg but he was sitting on my lap. Poor guy.

Huckle~Pip is a bit stuffed into his skin. I’m trying though! He doesn’t get ‘a small bite’ of the snacks and things my human girls get. He only gets a certain amount of dry food and a smaller amount of his wet food. He is on a low dose steroid for his allergies so that might have a little to do with it but with the cold weather coming, his allergies won’t be so bad so we can back off the steroid. I’m so sorry about your house fires and your dogs. God Bless you! I don’t know how I would handle that. :(

Sue S~Your church sounds wonderful! Have a great time with your Halloween hymns. Huckle~our church won’t let the kids come in costume b/c Halloween isn’t a ‘religious’ holiday. I think that is terrible! Oh well. One can spoil things for many.

I still haven’t gotten Pip’s picture up yet..I’m gettin’ there!

Happy Halloween everyone!

Gina, if the steroid is Prednisone, it definitely will cause weight gain.  I have to be careful with Romeo when he is on it for his allergies.  My husband was a long time Prednisone user and it made him swell up.  Sounds to me as if you are doing everything right.  Hugs to Pip.

It works for me!  Happy Friday to all of you out in Pug-Lover land!

Hi Sue VDB~ It’s called Temaril-P which my vet says is a low dose steroid with an antihistamine. I’m sure it has something to do with his ‘chubbyness’. My sister has been on prednisone too for her asthma and she said the same thing. I think I need to get him to be more active. He is content to sleep and I need to take him on walks etc. Although when I do take him on walks, it turns into a ‘sit’. He just sits down and doesn’t move. smile I need to work on that. smile

hi Gina..
Last fall when Mr. Skittles annual appointment came up, I was very surprised by his weight.  37 lbs!!
Oh no, I thought, he can’t be this heavy!!  He’s just a bit fluffy!!  So, the type of food I was giving him was ok, but I was over feeding him.. the portions were too much, along with the treats.  I have never fed him human scraps, good thing!  So, I took out the treats, except for 1 small denta-stick in the am, and he now gets mini carrots as a treat.  Then I skimmed the measuring cup to level instead of being rounded and in one month he lost 5lbs.  Plus we took him for 2 small walks a day until winter and the snow came.  Once spring was back, we started on the walks again and he has shed another 3 lbs.  Now he is 29lbs, and his vet appointment is coming up soon.
He dives into the food bowl, which makes me sad, but it is what he is suppose to have.  I have another 5lbs to go to make the vet happy, and we are working on that!
It may be difficult to see results at first because of the meds, but I know you will try to shave some of the fluffy from his frame   -

I don’t know whether it’s all the same for other steroids, but when Cooper1 was given it, a nurse friend of mine said to give him the medication early in the day.  I guess it makes them pee more than usual and who wants to be up all night!

Pat - did you take any photos of your 37# baby?  I can’t imagine what a Pug with that weight looks like.  It’s awesome that you’ve been able to get him down to 29#.  Outlining how you achieved that is really helpful. Abby swings back and forth between 20-22 and the vet “ain’t” happy. I know it puts a lot of stress on all sorts of organs but it’s so hard to reduce Pug body parts.  Heck, it’s even hard for me to reduce, but do I?

Everyone have a happy Halloween, kids, and don’t scare the little ones too much.  We always wear masks which startles the trick or treaters.

My Pickle weighed 38 pounds too, he is now down to 25 pounds. It has been a year since he started his diet food.  It is just so easy to over feed these little guys, and they just put the weight on, which we all know is not good for them.  Pickle has a new lease on life now, even though his back legs are not working anymore, due to neurological problems.  He gets around though, with and without his wheelchair.  I can just imagine how hard it would be for him to “pull” himself with his front legs if he still weighed 38 pounds!!!

Sue VDB~ *sigh* He totally has me exactly where he wants me. He sleeps in bed with us at night. Sometimes my 2 year old still wakes up so I hold her for a bit. When I come back, I have to carefully crawl into bed around Pip b/c heaven forbid I disturb him!

Hi Pat!~ 37 pounds. Wow. Congrats on helping him lose the weight though! Thats fantastic! I’ve started giving Pip some carrots, apples and green beans as treats and fillers in his supper. And fluffy is a great word! Thank you for thinking of us all the way in Nova Scotia!

Huckle~Yes-the vet told us that it would make him feel super thirsty so he would drink more thus, pee a lot more. We watch him carefully and get him outside a bit more. He is really good about ‘telling us’ when he has to go. He gets 2 pills Mon, Tues and Wed and then one pill on Thur and Fri and I give him that one pill in the mornings. Then on Sat and Sun he doesn’t get any ‘to give his body a rest’ as the vet says. But we’re looking forward to our first official freeze here in Omaha b/c that slows his allergies down and we can stop giving him the meds as often.

Hi Toni~It is so easy to over feed. They just ‘appreciate’ the food so much. Taking your baby from 38 down to 25 is amazing! Great job! That is so great that he has a wheel chair. We took Pip swimming this past summer and there was a little pug there who was in a wheel chair too. Not in the pool of course smile but when she got out she got ‘hooked up’ and was on her way!

Thanks everyone for all of your advice and words of wisdom. Oh! I’ve tried to post a pic of Pip in his costume but for some reason I’m having trouble. I’m going to keep trying though. smile

Sue - it’s Saturday morning here and don’t know whether you will come back to this blog date or not, but I was doing some reading online and came across a booklet about FHO surgery, physical therapy plus a worksheet for keeping on track.  I thought it might be of help for you to know some of this before the surgery and from what I can tell, certainly afterward.  The site is www.topdoghealth.com.  Hopefully it can be of help to you and Abby.

Hi Huckle thanks for looking it up that was so sweet I will try to learn as much as possible about it I know my Toby had the same surgery when he was four months old and he did not need physcial therapy but the doctor told me because of Abby losing so much muscle mass she is going to need the physcial therapy he said it is a long road to recovery I am just as scared about that as the surgery and now I noticed she is starting to lose muscle mass in her right leg her surgery is on tuesday and I will let you know how she does after I hear from the vet I am so thankful for Corrine for this blog as I have made so many caring friends

Hasn’t this blog just helped us all immeasurably.  We would rather be fish at sea without it at times.

Your fear is understood about your helping Abby afterwards.  For one thing you don’t want to do anything to hurt your baby, but that is a part of recovery.  And Abby knows you love her and don’t want to hurt her so she is placing her complete trust in you.

When you get overwhelmed by the enormity of it, just give a shout out.  We are here to support you and Abby and know you would do the same for any of us.  That’s what Pug People do.

Your worry is understandable.  We will be with you in spirit on Tuesday and for the days following.  Things will be fine.

Take care, and smooooches to Abby.

Pug hugs,
Huckle & the Swamp Pugs
