We’re in the Pumpkin

Henry, Benjamin and Luna

Over the weekend, G-Ma sent Benjamin, Henry & Luna a text message letting them know that she spotted canned pumpkin in the grocery store. Knowing how surprised and excited I would be to see that pumpkin is back in stock, she even sent a picture along as proof.

The next day, at the grocery store, I headed right to the pumpkin aisle and sure enough canned pumpkin was once again lining the shelves. I bought a few cans to tide us over, knowing that I would be going to Sam's Club to stock up soon. Sam's Club doesn't normally carry canned pumpkin, but I have noticed that they generally sell it in the Fall. So, I was hoping that if pumpkin was back in most stores that Sam's would have it in stock as well.

I made the trip to Sam's on monday, I and was pleased to see cans of pumpkin piled up. I loaded up the cart with 3 cases of the cans. Crazy, I know, but, I like to have a nice stockpile and you can't always get the 29 ounce cans year round.

I would like to send a big thank you to Heather, Huckle & G-Ma who were generous enough to send us pumpkin during the pumpkin shortage.

Well, after all pugs can never have too much pumpkin. That is an adorable picture. The Pugs should really be on a Libby’s commercial. I know it would make me want to go out and buy it.

I agree, pugkin spokesmodels for sure!!  Benjamin looks a little concerned that it is taking too long to open the cans…Hank looks very *proud* of his newfound collection of the good stuff and Looney looks like she is keeping a keen eye on the stash saying, “don’t come any closer…this is OUR pumpkin!”

Glad I could contribute to their enjoyment…and I’ve learned a very important lesson…stock up NOW!!!  (Still drives me crazy that pumpkin people don’t think some of us like to cook with it year round!!!)...

Bone appetite gang!!!!

... this must be the “Peanuts Gang” with their version of the great pumpkin, and sitting in the patch waiting for the great pumpkin to come!!

as Heather said, “Bon Appetite”

Do you think they are trying to decide, of the three of them, who deserves the most pumpkin.  Play nice, kids.  No fair hiding the can opener from the other two either.

I think Brenda and Danielle are right.  You should submit this picture to Libby.  It is so adorable.  I also agree with Heather about the expression on Benjamin’s face.  That picture is going in my save file.

I saw a blurb in the paper yesterday (national news!) that the pumpkin shortage was over, and I thought of my Florida pug friends.  When my Henry had his birthday in May, I couldn’t find pumpkin so we had to settle for a carrot/peanut butter cake.

Henry, Benny and Luna are counting the cans to be sure there is enough!!!  Bet they ALL keep track for a while to make sure they get lots of their most loved treat PUNKIN BREAD ROCKS!!!!

Punkin is really easy to cook for us humans!! Canned…
Open can and put contents in a sklett (OPPS on spelling). Cook until most of water is gone.Put big pats of butter in pan, add brown sugar to taste. Stir to keep from burning. Great as is OR put tiny marshmellows on top for an added treat.

Fresh…peel and cut punpkin into small pieces. Boil covered with a little water until soft and water is almost gone. Add the butter and brown sugar to taste, cook a little more. Smash in pan and serve.

Dogs love this also BUT go light on the brown sugar.

Love the picture! What a good lookin’ bunch! I may have to try makin’ some pugkin bread this year!!

While we’re on the subject of food~ Would anyone mind if asked how much food you feed your pugs? My pug is very chubby and I’ve never measured out his food but I think it would help. I have no idea how much to measure though. Would anyone want to share how much food they feed their dogs? Thanks all!

Great picture indeed!  I too agree, Libby needs to see this smile

Gina, Romeo weighs 23 lbs. and I want him to lose a pound or two.  The feeding guide on his Wellness package says up to 1-1/3 cups per day, but that is too much for him, so I feed him 1/2 level cup twice a day.  It depends on how much Pip weighs and how big he is.  Your vet usually has a good measure for that.  Yes, you should definitely measure Pip’s food, especially if he/she is very food motivated, as most pugs are.

Andi

Gina, if you ask my pugs they’ll say I don’t feed them enough! wink  I measure their food too.

For Annabelle, she’s at a trim weight of 21 lbs, and she gets 1/2 cup twice a day.  Piper, he’s my biggest at 25 1/2 lbs and he just lost 2 lbs smile, he gets 1/2 cup twice a day.  Marley is the chubby one at 17 lbs, he needs to loose a pound or two, he’s really short and compact, right know he looks like a stuffed sausage, but he’s so darn cute!  He gets 1/3 of a cup twice a day.  And Tessa Grace, who has luxating patellas in both back legs and really needs to stay trim because of that, she gets 1/3 a cup twice a day.  It doesn’t sound like a lot of food, but it really helps everybody to stay trim to measure the food.  And for their treats, they get healthy stuff like raw carrots and apples, which they LOVE.  Hope that helps smile

Sue and Andi~ Thank you so much. That info really does help! Pip weighs about 25 pounds and that is too much! When you look down on him, you see a waist (the vet says thats important) but when you look at him from the side, he looks like a beer barrel!

We get comments all the time from people: “My, he is really round!” “He looks like a butterball turkey!” “Wow, he is really spheracle” (I don’t think thats even a word! smile ) That person wanted to pick him up just to see how heavy he was. smile

I’m going to start measuring his food and now I have a starting point! I have something to go by! Thanks so much for you help ladies!!

(Chubby) Pug Hugs ~ Gina & Pip (I’m not exactly slim so if Pip knew I was sharing his weight with everyone, he wouldn’t be happy with me. wink  )

Gina, I am no longer slim myself, and even though I watch what I eat (a medical necessity), I do not lose weight, but I keep very good track of my 5 furbabies. They never live long enough, but I want them to live as long as possible.

Andi mentioned snacks.  The only snack Romeo and the other 2 dogs receive is one treat in the morning and one treat in the evening because my Chinese Crested has to take meds twice a day.  Missy gets her pills in pill pockets and Romeo and Minnie each get two pieces of Wellness treats.

I absolutely refuse to give them people food.  For their own good those sad eyes have no affect on me (haha, and because they know it doesn’t do any good, they no longer give me sad eye looks.

Julie - carrot/peanut butter cake?  Recipe, please…it sounds good.

I try to give the 3 pugs about 1/2 cup each - Blue Buffalo or some other quality canned mixed in with Blue Buffalo dry.  They all get fed at once which presents a problem as Cooper2 thinks all 4 bowls are his and he tries to gulp one after another (any ideas on a solution to that?).  Cooper2 gets about 1-1.5 cups in his bowl.  The problem that needs to be figured in, is whatever treats they may get during the day (as in rewards or meds).

Andi - what’s your secret to Piper losing 2#s?  Abby always needs to lose weight - all though I hand feed her (from a fork no less) and Georgie has the shape of a wheelbarrow (very odd looking Pug).  Gracie is no bigger than a minute and Cooper2 is a gangly puppy (with little sense.  He fell off the chair today with a loud THUD - and never woke up!) and always hungry.

It sounds like about 1/2 cup is the norm although that seems like so little, doesn’t it.

Hi Sue~ Those big puppy dog eyes get me everytime! Growing up we always had yorkies who I have found aren’t piggies like our puggies smile So we have fed them people food. I think thats our downfall with Pip. I’m slowly moving away from that but it isn’t easy.

We took care of our friend’s dachshund and she was so tiny and b/c of her back and the breed, they measured her food. At first I thought it was sad and not enough but when I measured the food out each day, it was more than enough for her. So that got me thinking about Pip and about the changes I need to make for his health.

I read somewhere that greenbeans are good and filling so I mix those in with some of his food sometimes and he seems to like that.

Thanks so much for the advice. It’s truly appreciated!

Hi Huckle~ We must’ve been typing our responses at the same time smile I was wondering about the wet food. Pip gets a touch of wet food in the morning and then hems and haws over his dry food. I bet if I mix them together, he will eat both and maybe that will help with him thinking he is starving! smile I will add that to the measured amount that everyone already suggested. smile

I love that you hand feed your puggie from a fork! And one looks like a wheelbarrow?! You must post a picture. smile And Cooper2 falling w/o waking. *sigh* They make us laugh don’t they! smile

Huckle, I have grabby eaters at my house.  Romeo and Minnie eat together.  Minnie finishes first but she lets Romeo eat in peace.  Missy is a very slow eater and then both of them are hounding her and will grab her food.  I close her in the bathroom until she finishes, and it works out well.  With your energetic Cooper, don’t know if that would be a solution, but it works here.

Huckle

Yes, green beans are a good filler.  Lately I have been using French cut green beans instead of the whole ones which I just end up cutting up anyway.  I don’t know about any other veggies.

SueVDB - good idea.  I’ll try feeding Cooper in the bathroom so the others get a chance at food.  I had forgotten about that.

Huckle, I think this is the recipe we used:
http://www.dogbirthdaysandparties.com/dogbirthdaycakerecipe.htm
Instead of carrot decorations, we spelled out the dogs’ names in alphabet cookies, and garnished with purple pansies.  smile
