The Anatomy of a Bed Hog

Luna - the bed hog

There is no denying that Luna is a pint sized pug.  As small as she is though you can never count her out and you can’t really share a bed with her.  Somehow, someway, tiny little Luna is able to kick me out of a King size bed almost every night.  I have analyzed her methods and I think I have figured out how she does it.

I am a very sound sleeper and one of the lucky ones that as soon as my head hits the pillow I am out.  Every night is pretty much the same thing.  I start out in my spot, laying on my stomach and Luna crawls under the covers and lays parallel to my body pushed up against my hip and stomach.  I quickly fall asleep and then at some point I hear my subconscious telling me that I am squishing the dog.  So, without stirring, I scooch a little bit closer to the edge of the bed so that I can rest without laying on Luna.  Luna then moves closer to me so that she can be pressed up against my hip and stomach.  At that point we are in the exact same position as when the night started EXCEPT I am a few inches closer to the edge of the bed.  Repeat this process over the course of several hours and the next thing I know it is 3AM and I suddenly can’t fit both of my legs on the bed.

So how exactly does 15 pound Luna keep getting wedged underneath of me.  When her tail uncurls does it also function as a jack?  If my subconscious mind didn’t tell me to move over, what exactly would she do?

The worst part is that as Luna pushes me right off the bed, the other pugs claim the free bed space that she has created.  So to get back in bed, I have to move at least two pugs if not more in my delirious state.  And if one of those pugs is Benny and it happens to be around the 4AM hour I cringe.  Because if Benny wakes up at that time of the morning he is going to be hungry and he will keep everyone up running in and out of the doggie door doing his little “I’m hungry, feed me, oh yay I’m going to eat” happy dance.  Its mornings like that that sleeping on one of the dog beds doesn’t seem so bad.

This is awesome…love the enhancements to the picture! No recommendations though. I don’t fare much better when all the dogs are in bed with us. Thanks for starting the day out wonderfully!

I was literally laughing out loud!!  Too cute.  Our daughter says Mr. Skittles is also a bed hog… she calls him her bed pug.

I got a kick out of the pug-diagnostic.  Good deal :D

Glad to hear I’m not the only one kicked out of bed by a pug!!

Dear OBP-ers, I too, had this issue-what with one boston and one pug and only a queen size bed, I figured out that if I start out at the edge, then I finish at the edge. The only issue is when Daisey gets cold if she started out on top of the covers and has to get under the covers. If its cold she starts and ends under the covers. Beauty starts and ends on top of the covers unless it gets really cold then see scenerio #2. With 4 puggies all I can say is GOOD LUCK!! Have a great week-end all!

We’ve tried to sleep with Bennie, but it just doesn’t work.  He walks around constantly—including across the top of my pillow—which pulls my hair!  He’ll even walk right over my stomach!

Ha!  This was adorable…Love her pic marked up with stats…We all know how it is…Pug Hogs in the bed is the only reality!!  grin  Have a great weekend all!

Sorry but I find this hilarious!  How is it that we humans let these little critters run our lives?  When we have Molly at our house we have the same situation.  She has to sleep with grandpa and gramma..she starts out under the covers by our feet but sometime during the night she creeps up between us and stretches out.  She sleeps on her side and pushes against my husbands back so she’s pressed up against my back.  Well at my age she’s like a furnace, so yup, guess who ends up out of the bed…it sure ain’t the dog and it’s sure not the hubby!  Ya know what though?  I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thanks for making my day once again!!

So glad someone else out there shares my bed pain!  I always try to figure out how I get pushed off and not the husband????

“The Anatomy of a Bed Hog” is quite an attention grabber and oh so funny, funny!  Romeo has three positions -  tight up against me (without moving), on top of me or off to the side. Corrine, you have once again started my day with a good laugh.

Everyone have a good weekend, and hopefully some good sleep!

Sleighbelle

03/13/2009

ROFL!!! Like the other posters, I have the same darn issue with Sleighbelle, only she’s a bit hefter than Luna.  Thus her thrust-to-push ratio is higher and she can move her mom several inches at a time.  And she does not understand the concept of parallel sleeping…she insists on being perpendicular to her mom.  That queen size bed is sometimes not big enough for the two of us.  Guess who ends up scrunched up, hanging onto the edge of the bed???

Andrea G.

03/13/2009

Too funny!! smile  We have that little problem too!  And I love the picture of little Luna…she has a sassy look on her face that says, “Mom, are you talking about me?”

Gabes Mom

03/13/2009

Gabe weighs about 21 lbs. starts out on my shoulder and chest, moves to my right side, then ends up in the middle with me hanging on the edge. I also would’nt have it any other way!!!

My boy Max, a 30 lb. pug, sleeps right next to me and spoons with me all night!
We have a king sized bed and its me, my husband and Max.
Works for all of us!

Sleighbelle

I think Luna is thinking, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful, hate me cause I’m Queen of the Bed!!!”

Mandy Reid

03/13/2009

I’ve learned a long time ago that the nice king sized bed with the memory foam mattress isn’t mine even though I paid for it, it belongs to Rosco of course.  How does one 15 pound Pug take up the entire bed you ask?  Because Ross is Boss!

Heather

03/13/2009

Sleighbell - “Push - to - thrust” ratio…ahahahahahaha…LOL LOL…LOVE it!

Karen B

03/13/2009

We also have issues with C.J. and Toeby.  I pretty much have them trained to stay on my left side so that my right side can go up against the hubby.  The best nights?  When the pugs are snoring so loudly that Daddy gets up and goes to the couch…Then I get his side and the pugs spread out over my side!  LOL!

By the way, have you all seen the “Bed Hog” blanket throw at the Danbury Mint website?  I had to have one…Not cheap but it’s so cute, I couldn’t resist.  Also can be purchased in other breeds.  Check it out!  You’ll all be wanting one too!

Darci and Abbey the Pug

03/13/2009

Too funny!  If you ask me, I think it’s a conspiracy!  All four of them are in on it!  Luna is just the smallest so she knows she can get you to move.  If it were Henry or Benny trying to move you, you’d assume they could take a little weight and you’d push back.  Wait until they get Sol in on the plan!  Then they’ll have you off the bed twice as fast!  Great post!

Sue VDB

03/13/2009

Karen B, I just checked out the Danbury Mint website and saw the pug bed hog.  How funny, and I’m sure many of you can relate.  Thanks for the heads up.

Connie

03/13/2009

That was hilarious. Thank you for sharing.
I guess I’m lucky when it comes to Lucy the pug, she sleeps on my head or curled into my stomach. Although, I do sleep on the edge because there are 3 dogs in the bed who, once they’re settled, will not move and I’m stuck in one position for the night.
Have a great weekend everyone.

03/13/2009

Sue VDB, is it not the cutest throw you’ve ever seen?  It’s even cuter in person cuz you can see more of the detail on it!  Glad you liked it!  They have a whole line of pug items and every so often I find something I can’t live without, like the pug Christmas tree and the Halloween spooky pug house!  They light up and are very festive!

Karen B

03/13/2009

I should mention, too, that once you order from the Danbury website, they will send you mail which I don’t consider “junk mail” cuz it’s all pug stuff!  They really have some cute items for all us pug groupies!

Ann

03/13/2009

We tried to solve the pug bed hog problem several years ago by investing in a California King.  No such luck.  We either end up having more pugs (at one point we were up to 10 in the bed with us…don’t ask.)  At the moment it is four, and they take up an amazing amount of space.  My worst problem though is waking up with my entire body in an agonizing cramp and not being able to breathe because I have been sandbagged into a single position for the past 5 hours and my heftiest pug, Flynn (at 26 lbs.) has draped himself over my chest (his favorite sleeping position) limiting my lung function. No wonder I have nightmares about being stepped on by a giant, furry Godzilla.

Karen B

03/13/2009

Ann, I am cracking up!  A giant furry Godzilla??  Too cute!  These little guys and gals do have a way about them, don’t they?

Shelley

03/13/2009

My husband always says that Lucy allows us to sleep in “her” bed.  He is always sleeping with one arm on the nightstand and one leg hanging off the bed.  I don’t tolerate that quite so much.  If they are bugging me I will move them.  I figure they don’t have to get up for any early meetings and have lots of time to get a nap in during the day.

Lex

03/13/2009

Haha I think we all know how it goes. I can only let them sleep with me because Gus will keep me up all night. Indy likes to sleep under the covers curled about against me so I need to claim my spot quickly or else I am at the edge of the bed with no covers. Gus likes to sleep on top of the covers using me as a pillow. Which means no covers since he is 26lbs plus dead weight. And if I wake him? It is the same thing with Benny except with whining and more whining and going to the bathroom on the floor since we don’t have a doggy door.

And I have woken up on top of literally the cat and Indy before (seperate times). 2am frantic that I had smothered the cat/dog and only to have them eventually wake up mad because I woke them up… sigh…

Ok, I went to the Danbury Mint site and saw the pug bed hog plate, but not the throw.  Is it still available?  thanks!

Stacey

03/13/2009

I can totally relate! We sleep with 3 Pugs on a queen size bed. The Pugs don’t seem to snuggle with my husband like they do with me, so he gets to have “his” side of the bed….
It’s a tight squeeze every night, but I don’t think I’d be able to sleep very well without them!!
I just wish I had the nap time that they have during the day!!!

Ivy M. Andrews

I think the true inventor of velcro was a pug. No matter where I sit or lay, the pugs are on me, next to me or touching me somehow. Of course Spanky, my shih tzu loves it because he has all the room he needs as he only wants a five minute belly rub and he’s gone. The plus side of the pugs is I don’t have to keep the house that warm in the winter.

Karen B

03/13/2009

Sleighbelle, I hope it’s still available, cuz it’s too cute to discontinue!  But I just went to the site and did a search.  I only found the plate also!  So sorry, I had no idea they wouldn’t still have it!

I have gotten such a chuckle! My hubby thinks we are the only crazies in the universe because our 2 lovely ladies sleep with us! And like so many-they both cling to me and when Daisey(boston),Beauty(pug) and my husband get to snoring together-well, I get 3 part snore harmony!! And a little less sleep than the 3 of them!

Sue VDB

03/13/2009

Sue s, don’t know how you get ANY sleep.  This is truly a funny and fun site today.  Thanks everyone for making my day so bright.  Romeo is going to get some extra belly rubs tonight.

This site really does bring such joy and commraderie…and I don’t know about everybody else, but there’s just this natural feeling of ‘love’ toward fellow puggie people that ‘get it’...most especially where our lil OBP Following group is concerned.

Came home from a long day and checked for updated comments…and was instantly met by more stories of similarity and joy and appreciation.  LOVE IT!

P.S.  As I type, Baxter is curled up in the crook of my legs (I am sitting/lying on my left side with legs to my right, slightly bent) and Riley is curled up, his chest-and-above resting on my bent legs, and his bum and back up against my chest…both are snoring.  LOL…It’s like ying and yang of momma and pugs.

Linda

03/13/2009

This so funny, I thought we were the only ones that allowed our pug to sleep with us. I was embarassed at work to admit it. People wonder why I say I didnt get any sleep. I woke up at 2 am the other day with Brandy sitting on my chest staring at me, what a site in the dark grin

Oh my gosh how that rings true! I read this outloud to my husband and he loved it concurred.
However nowadays Beauregard littile big man has decided that my pillow should be his landing spot.  This does not sit well with me with a snorning pug in my and my husbands ear all night long. lol   Thanks for sharing

I love Luna’s little Pink Harness and her Bed Hog story. Too cute and true.  I have learned this just since Sunday, March 15, when we picked up our baby PUG, Cooper.

Cooper is a 4.8 pound, 9 wk old Baby Puggy, and oh my Gosh, what a surprise when he lunged for my earrings, and took one out.  Then he calmed down for the ride home, and was perfect the first night and then he decided to show his true colors, as it were.  I have a Cal. King-Sized Bed, and it was just Cooper and me, and that tiny little Tornado zips around that bed so fast I can hardly keep up with him.  He is so cute, and finally lay down by me, and then for no reason, just jumped upon my head with a ““THRUST.”  He does everything with a “THRUST.” He dives and grabs and chews and he is just a bundle of ENERGY AND I LOVE HIM.
He always has this mischievous look in his eyes.  He is Mr. Personality.  Actually, his crate arrived and he can lie calmly in it and play with his toys and Teddy Bear.  He is so tiny and I have the cameras but I can’t locate my cord so have to wait a bit to take pictures of Cooper and Miss Katie together.  What a contrast.  She weighs 128lbs. and he, 4.8 lbs.  Love to read about Pugs.

Thanks to everyone who wrote to me about the kind of food you feed your babies.  I loved all my e-mails.  Thanks again.
Elizabeth~

Elizabeth, how funny, and welcome to the land of Pugdom.  Cooper is a very typical pug puppy and you will be laughing all the time at the antics he pulls.  Pugs are nothing but sheer delight to have.  Please keep on posted. I love Cooper.

P.S. Elizabeth, are you the one who posts on Daily Puppy all the time?

Elizabeth Stratton

03/19/2009

In response to Sue VDB, Does that stand for Vandervilt???  Just thought I’d ask?  Yes, that would be me who posts on DP.  Who else is silly enough to have a beautiful blue Great Dane named Miss Katie, 7 years old, a beautiful Himalayan Cat named Miss Jassmine, and a brand new PUG PUPPY named Mini Anderson Cooper. I am loving this new puppy.  He is really waking me at times that are Ungodly, but I love him anyway… He is my wee little Boy.  E

Elizabeth, no it stands for Van De Berghe.  I don’t post too many comments on DP, but sign in as bopeep when I do.

Sue VDB, I have seen Bo Peep many times on the DP and love to see your comments.  I love the DP also.  wink
