Rough Day for Benny

Benjamin

Yesterday, we dropped Benny at the vet to have a chest x-ray taken. Benny, has been coughing every now and again and after Solsey's chronic cough we are paranoid whenever one of the pugs coughs. So, last week we made an appointment to talk to our vet. We explained the situation and our paranoia and our vet thought that the best course of action would be to bring Benny in one morning and they could lightly sedate him and get a good chest x-ray to see what was going on.

Funny side note, Solsey never needed to be "lightly sedated" for her x-rays. She was such a good girl that they could just plop her down and she would remain completely still while they did the x-rays.

Benjamin also had a bump on his chest that we showed our vet during our appointment. He said while Benny was sedated he would take a better look and possibly aspirate it to find out what was going on.

So, we dropped Benny off yesterday morning for his procedures, hoping to find out what was causing the tickle in his throat from time to time.

Just before lunch, I got a call from the vet. I thought it was a bit early for Benny to be finished, but I thought maybe they were just running ahead of schedule. Instead of it being a vet tech, it was my vet on the other line. As soon as I heard his voice, I got nervous. The vet never calls just for an update. Sensing my nervousness, he quickly reassured me that Benny was lightly sedated and doing OK. However, they aspirated the growth on his chest and had a look at it under the microscope and it is a mast cell tumor.

My stomach sank.

Since it was a mast cell tumor, my vet wanted to put Benny completely under and remove it and get it sent off for testing. I gave the go ahead and yesterday, Benny had the tumor removed from his chest.

The incision runs vertically on his chest and is closed with 10 stitches. It is in a really awkward spot to bandage, so the vet told us to keep Benny in a t-shirt to help keep the wound clean.

Benny is still pretty wiped out from his big day, so it is a little too early to tell if he is in much pain. After we got him home, we tried to set him up on one of the dog beds, but he wanted to be on the sofa. So we made him a nice little place to rest on his favorite spot on the sofa. He has been comfortably resting ever since.

In the meantime, the waiting game has begun. We could have the pathology results back as early as Friday, but more than likely we won't know anything until after the holiday weekend.

Needless to say, I am sick with worry. We don't have a great track record of getting good news with pathology reports. However, I am hoping that our luck will change.

As far as the chest x-rays are concerned, Benjamin's trachea looks very good as do his lungs. However, his soft palette is elongated. This is the most likely culprit of his cough. So, after we know the pathology results and he chest incision has fully recovered it is off to the specialist to have his soft palette shortened.

Oh no, Benjamin Baby…talk about unexpected events.  My heart is so heavy with this news, but I just know that everything is going to be just fine with the pathology!  Baxter has been through a couple of mast cells and also had his palette shortened when he was younger…and here he is 12 years later, perfect.  I know that will be the same for you Sweet Benny.  Cole needs his palette shortened too so we’ll be in the same boat soon.

So many prayers are going up for this little love of “ours” and Corrine, we will be waiting on pins and needles right here with you for the pathology report.  Please give Benny some lovin’ from me!!!

Ben, I think you look incredibly handsome in your T-shirt sweetie…a very good look while keeping your incision nice and clean.

I knew I didn’t like the title of your blog.  It is much too soon after dealing with Solsey to go through this; however, with all the prayers and good thoughts coming his way, he is sure to make a complete recovery.  Corrine, know that we are all in pain with you and here to support you.  Baby Benny, get well really soon.

Oh Dear.  I love your puggies as much as I love my own.  So now I am waiting anxiously to get the news too.  I’m going to the store this afternoon to stock up on Pumpkin.  I was brought up to feed people in times of illness/surgery, so I guess that will have to happen for this wrinkly bag of pug love too!!!

My thoughts are with you Corrine!

This can’t be happening.  Abby, Cooper and I are holding our collective breaths and picturing only a positive outcome to this latest trial.  Any other thought is far too outrageous.  Every thought for you will be a prayer.

Cancer is never good news, but it isn’t necessarily fatal either. My foster pug Quincy had 3 tumors removed, went through chemo and has 3 more tumors that came up. He’s 11. He’s doing great now. I understand that sinking feeling all too well, but know that your web family is pulling for you and praying for you.

I am so optomistic for you! I am owned by two pugs, and we have been through mast cell tumors and palette surgery. First, there is a new drug called palladia, that was desined specifically to treat mast cell tumors in dogs. My little Rosie has had surgery twice to remover tumors, and when they popped up for the third time my vet suggested we see an oncologist. The palladia was suggested by the oncologist. After only 6 weeks the tumors were gone and Rosie had no side effects. All she had to do was eat a pill with her breakfast three days a week. She is so happy, and no more surgery! We continue to keep her on the palladia as a preventative measure against new tumors.

Second, we just had the palette surgery for our Roxy last Tuesday. She immediately began breathing better. To see that she can play and not become winded is such a joy to me; I hated to see her struggle to breath. Although I miss her loud grunts and snorts, her quality of life has improved so much.

So as you can see, I am very optimistic. Having been through this I know that the pugs are so much stronger than I am. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about the palladia and how Rosie reacted to it. I am happy to share our experiences!

We had that just a couple months ago with our pug Homer.  99% chance it’s nothing they said but then I proceeded to read things on the internet.  Which really didn’t seem true once we talked to the vet.  It was a trying time but I’m sure little Benny will be just fine like Homer was.  You can’t even hardly tell on his little leg now all they took out.  I hope you get results soon!

NO, NO, NO!  I can’t take any more!  And NOT Benny!  I will certainly pray that all is well with our little Star of OBP!  Sounds like there are some options out there that may be helpful!  Corrine, I am thinking of you and the entire OBP family and hoping and praying that there’s no more bad news.  I hate that these babies have to go through these things!!!!

I have a question…These mast cell tumors, are they very common in pugs cuz it seems like we’ve had many folks write in with them!  How do you spot them, are they hard or soft lumps?  I’d love more info if anyone out there can shed some light…

Our hearts go out for Benny and you. We will keep you two in our prayers. Things should get better. Sols is looking out for all of you and especially Benny. The good thing is that you took action right away and not let it prolong. We need a foundation…a fundraiser for all dogs in vet care especially pugs. I cannot bear seeing the vet bill after given procedures.

Heather

Karen B - Mast cells typically present as little hard lumps…the thing we were told to keep an eye out for (and witnessed both times) is that mast cells tend to get bigger, and then get smaller again, and then bigger…the size fluctuates…If you see any unusual lumps, best thing is to bring them in.  In my experience, my vet can often tell what type of lump is ‘just a bump’ and one that needs to be investigated more just by a look.

If it turns out to be suspicious by eye, they will typically aspirate it and that is when they can tell for sure that it is a mast cell.  If it is, they remove the lump and a margin around it to be sure they get all the cells.  Typically the “grade” is given when the removed tissue is evaluated, if I remember correctly.

When in doubt, have them checked out!

Thank you everyone for the well wishes.  I must say that I am feeling a bit more optimistic having Benny around.  Yesterday was tough because all the news was filtering in and Benny was still at the vet recovering from surgery.  But today, he has been sleeping soundly in his little t-shirt all day.  He got excited when it was time to eat and that of course made me smile.

We are still waiting for the pathology results, but today, we have more of our usual resolve.  The best possible news is that it comes back a Grade I.  But, we are preparing ourselves incase it comes back something more sinister.  Whatever it takes, we will do it.

Karen B - From what I have quickly learned, mast cell tumors are actually fairly common in dogs.  They can go from Grade I to Grade III and then they have different stages that help determine severity.

Benny’s bump on his chest was light pink.  The most notable thing was that it would change size.  Sometimes it would be barely noticeable and others it would be much larger.

Thanks again for all the positive thoughts.  As soon as I know something I will let you know.

Corrine, thank you for your post.  You know that all of us have been concerned about you as well as Benny.  He seems to be feeling pretty good considering what he has been through, and I know that makes you feel better. Pugs, as you know, are very resilient.

I will be in S. Carolina Friday to attend my granddaughter’s hs graduation and I won’t get to see your Friday post.  Believe me with all the excitement going on I will still have all of you in my thoughts and prayers.  Hopefully you will get good news, and hopefully Friday.

Hugs to all at OBP.

Heather and OBP, t19hanks for the information on mast cell tumors.  I would not have even known to look for them.  I am praying for the “Bennyman” and he just has to have a good outcome!  That’s all there is to it…

We are definitely sending positive thoughts out for Benny. I too hope you hear before the long weekend, darn it!

Our vet said the same thing about mast cell tumors; watch out for HARD bumps. And they can change size so quickly!  Charlie’s would be small one day and big the next, then back to small again.  Very scary.  But Corrine, I just know that boy will get through everything just fine.  Still wish I could give him a hug in person, though.

I am praying for you, Benny.  Just wanted to share our experience with mast cell.  Lily was diagnosed with one and had it removed in January.  Hers was about the size of an eraser on the end of a pencil, it would come and go.  The vet removed it with wide margins, it too was on her chest.  It looked as if she had a little tummy tuck after surgery.  Although it was a very scary experience for us, thankfully the pathology report came back as a grade I with clear margins.  She recovered greatly and is back to her spunky self again.  I am praying for Benny’s results to be just as promising as Lily’s and have faith that it will be.  Thinking of you!  Tammy & Lily
