Off to the Specialist

Benjamin

For the last week, we have been telling Benny that today is his "Special" day. But, I am pretty sure that the type of "special" that today holds isn't quite the "special" that Benny has in mind.

This morning we are off to see the Specialist about Benny's soft palate surgery. Being all healed up from the surgery to remove his mast cell tumor, we wanted to get in to see the specialist to hopefully rid him of his cough. He still has been waking himself up with a little cough pretty regularly.

Hopefully, the consultation will go well and we will be able to schedule Baby Benny's surgery. Then, fingers crossed for another quick recovery and that Benny will be breathing a lot better after the operation.

Poor Baby benny..he has had enough. Toby and I are praying for good news for you today.

Just a note..Toby’s seizures continued and although all lab work was normal, I just couldn’t let this continue so the vet started him on Phenobarbitol this week. Hoping and praying tis will take care of it.

Good luck to Benny. It should make a huge difference to have his palate worked on. I haven’t had to worry about it (thank goodness), but I have met plenty who have and it has worked wonders for their pugs. Speedy recovery big guy!

Hey-just wanted to let you know that one of my babies “Kobe” has had soft palate surgery twice at Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching School. He has done well both times. The surgeons there said that it was rare that the surgery had to be performed twice but since he is not your “common” pug, (but none of them are “common”, they are each special and unique), he did well all in all. He still occasionally has some congestion and has to take antibiotics from time to time but the doctor said this is normal. I will keep you & Benny and the others in my prayers.

Oh Benjamin, tons of kissed on that perfect wrinkly face.  As mom may have told you, Mr. Cole just had his soft pallet surgery.  He is one week out and doing wonderfully.

Your recovery should be painless and you’ll be breathing easy in no time sweet boy.  Tell mom to stock up on soft treats and food!

Lots of love to you…I know you will handle this like a trooper just as you always do.

Ah Benny, i know you don’t want this kind of “special” but mom and dad are doing it so you have a better life.  But, from the looks of this picture, you don’t seem too terribly worried.  Trust in the mom and dad and all will be right.
Prayers going up for the Benny!

Good luck on the soft pallete surgery.  My puggsie lover had his soft pallete reduced the year after we got him as well as having his nostrils enlarged so he could breathe better.  It isn’t a fun surgery afterwards but once all healed up it is amazing the difference in how they breathe.  Good Luck.

I’m feeling a little in the dark…Did I miss a post that Benny was supposed to see a specialist or even that he had a cough?  I wish you all the best, of course, and here’s hoping that he will be able to get rid of the cough!  Oh, my gosh, now we have to worry more about Benny!  I’m not sure my nerves can take it…

Roxy had her soft palate and partial laryngeal collapse surgery just over six weeks ago. Her recovery was amazing, the only reason we even knew she had surgery is that she came out with a funny sounding bark. But the doctor said that as the weeks went on she would get her normal bark back. Good luck to Baby Benny with the specialist today, we will keep him in our thoughts and pug prayers!

I don’t think Benny was thinking this is something special I hope everything goes good at the specialist and Benny will be breathing better after his surgery good thoughts comming your way Benny and a big hug and kiss

Of course, I wish Benny all the best for the consultation and possible surgery.  It does anger me, however, that we humans are breeding a dog that has such a common defect.  Same thing for partial laryngeal collapse. It’s the same reason I feel conflicted when I see the pictures of the adorable puppies that people post here.  That means people are buying purebreds from breeders, and some portion of these cuties are going to face the same medical challenges no matter how responsible the breeder.  This is me standing on my soapbox for today.

Marcia, I am praying that Toby’s seizures will stop with his new meds and that you have no more occurrences!  Praying and thinking of you and Toby!

SusanL, I bought both CJ and Toeby from local breeders waaaaay before I was educated about puppy mills and rescue pugs.  They were actually given to me as Christmas and birthday gifts.  Had I known, I would have definitely taken a rescue pug…I consider CJ an “honorary” rescue because even though he was purchased from a breeder, he has been sickly a lot of his young 5 years.  His first year after having the soft palate correction and nose job, he had 2 bronchoscopies for problems with his lungs, a fractured wrist, chronic infected ear, and I think he’d have been a goner if anyone else had bought him!  I have THOUSANDS of dollars invested in my little puggie so he seems like a rescue pug in a way!  Toeby on the other hand, has been trouble free and he is also 5.  Since I have been on this blog and educated about puppy mills, I know I will never adopt another dog from a private breeder.  It just feels wrong to me to keep breeding when there are so many animals in shelters that need loving homes…SusanL, can you make room for me on your soapbox???

Marcia, my Missy was diagnosed with epilepsy, although I do believe it is a catch all phrase.  She has been on Phenobarbital for a year and is doing great.  She has to go in every 6 months for a Phenobarbital blood test to make sure her levels are where they should be.  She was increased from 1/2 pill 2x daily to 1 pill 2x daily and has had no more seizures.  While I am not a fan of a lot of medicine (even though I take multiple meds a day), this seems to have helped Missy out tremendously, as her sezures were severe and really hard to see.

Heather and SueVDB,
Thank you for your encouragement about Toby’s seizures. he has only beenon the Phenobarb for 1 week. For some reason, his seizures always happened on a friday so you can imagin I amgetting abit anxious about tomorrow. Will we have a seizure or won’t we???

Welcome aboard my soapbox, Karen.  It’s a bigger problem than puppy mills, unfortunately.  Of course, none of us would want to buy a dog from such a situation.  It seems to me that it’s “responsible breeders” also because we’re dealing with the results of the standards that dog breeding authorities (AKC etc.) are setting. I’m no expert but I’ve seen what’s happened with Siamese cats over the last 20 years as breeders are turning out cats with narrower and narrower heads. Time to hug my Ellie who is not as smushed-nosed as she is “supposed” to be.

Oh Marcia, how coincidental (?) that his seizures have happened on Fridays…my goodness, an unsettling fact for sure.  Please know that first thing in the morning I will be thinking of Toby and please let us know (throughout the day if we’re not asking too much) how he’s doing tomorrow.  I’m really hoping and praying that his level of phenobarbital has reached a therapeutic level and that tomorrow is seizure free!!

Sue VDB, that is very encouraging to hear about your success with Missy!

I think I’ve mentioned before that my prayers go up on my ride to work…know that around 6 AM (ugh), Marcia, one is going up for Toby,

Marcia - hoping for the best, of course, with Toby’s medication and that those awful, scary seizures stop for good.  Are there any side affects with Phenobarbitol?  I know you are worried about tomorrow and what it might bring, but we are all here for you.

And Benny, Baby Benny, you just get all fixed up as soon as possible.  We all think you have had enuf problems and now is your time to be well.

Susan L - you just stay right up there on your soapbox.  Your message is sound and right.  I knew I wanted another Pug but was encouraged by the OBP family to think of a rescue pug.  After that, I could not, in good conscience, even consider a breeder’s Pug and was almost ashamed that I had.  Now I have two of the sweetest, most loving four year old rescues that I would have passed over.  After Solsey’s passing away leaving all of us heartbroken, I felt it a tribute to her to do so (and these are even black!)

Anyone - I have a question about recognizing an elongated soft palette problem.  The little boy, Georgie, will have spurts throughout the day of what seems to be heavy panting that lasts for several minutes and occurs whether he is doing anything or not.He sounds as if he’s snorting for air.  Unfortunately he had not done it, that I recall, before his vet visit, but I’m wondering if that condition presents itself in the way I described?

Prayers and good fortune to Benny and Toby and all the rest.

Pug Hug,
Huckle & The Black Swamp3
