Nicknames

Benjamin, Henry, Luna and Sol

We received an email from Martha who requested that I follow up a little more on one of the Ask OBP questions. The question had to do with nicknames. We ran down the list of nicknames of our pugs and Cupid and we were hoping that you all would chime in with a comment about what you all have nicknamed your own troops. So, I wanted to specifically extrapolate that portion of the post and ask you all to share your pugs names and their nicknames. We think everyone would get a big hit from reading the names and how the nicknames came to be.

Happy Friday!

Minnie, Mack and Mario

09/25/2015

Well….let’ see if I can remember them all:
Mack - Mackie, Mackie Doodle, Mackster, Mr. McMackman
Minnie - Minster, Miss Minnie, Minnie Mouse, Minnisita, Minnie Cooper (which is her real name!), and she is my husband’s dogter.
Mario - Mar Mar, Big Boy. We adopted him with the name and it seems to fit. Don’t know why he does’t have more nicks…

Sue VDB and Annie Fannie

Wow! Starting with the first pug.

Puggy - was simply Puggy

Tiger - was simply Tiger Boy

Bo Peep - Peeper Dog, Angel Cake, Sugar Pie, Sugar Lump, Angel Face, Cupcake, Sweetie Pie. This all started when I first called her Angel Cake and got the famous head tilt.  It evolved from there just to see the expressions on her face, as if she was melting.

Annie - Annie Fannie because it rhymed, Princess Annie because she acted like a princess, Monkey Doodles is a name a friend gave her, and Wild Woman because she was dubbed that at doggie day camp when she acted like a wild woman.  When I picked her up from doggie day camp they couldn’t wait to tell me hilarious stories of what she did.  Sometimes when I talk to her I call her Princess Annie Fannie Alyssum (the name given to her when she was rescued by DFW) Monkey Doodles Wild Woman.  She is on full alert and seems to love being called that.

I have several other dogs, but just concentrating on the pugs.  My current other dog is a powder puff Chinese Crested named Missy and she is Missy Girl, or just Sweetie.

We called our Milo (recently departed over the bridge) bubblelicious, goober, goobydoo, little man and SUHWEETIE. Our timid rescue Princess (pre-named) is Princess Marie, baby girl, suhweetie (although at a lower velocity otherwise she freaks out) and as a side note after Milo passed she wouldn’t eat her treats.  What you say? A pug who won’t eat treats! She didn’t know how to be first :(.  Milo always positioned himself in the prime treat position and wolfed it down and then Princess got hers in a ladylike fashion. So now we are singing this little piggy went to market 1/4 of a treat, this little piggy stayed home another 1/4….What we do for our pug children. We are in the process of moving to a one floor house (yeah no more carrying the pugs up the stairs!) And selling our current home so it is a little crazy right now but as soon as we are settled Princess Marie will be getting a new rescue buddy. Happy Friday!

Flynn:  Lucky Star.  When he came to us from Central Florida Pug Rescue he happened to be wearing an enameled star tag on his collar.  A friend painted his portrait shortly thereafter and titled it “the Lucky Star”.  It stuck!

Pippin:  Fool of a Took! He is usually called this after he has figured out yet another locking mechanism on our kitchen cabinet and spread garbage over the house…he will be hiding under the bed when addressed thusly.  And yes, I am a big Tolkien nerd.

Julia: Julia tolerates no nicknames, only honorifics such as “Miss” and “Ma’am”.  She is, however, called “the Diva” and “the Princess” and “the Exalted World Dominator” behind her back.

Ben is Bennie, Bennie-wennie, Ben-a-ronie, Benito, B, B boy, Bubby, Bub-a-ronie, and last he is Bennie Bahungie.

When I got Bennie, I named him after the quarterback for the Steelers, so his full name was Ben Roethlisburger.  But when that quarterback’s off-field behavior was shameful, I didn’t want my pugs name connected to him anymore, so I “legally” changed Ben’s name to Bennie Bahungie.

Also, when I got Bennie, we had a German shepherd named Blue, and when they were together, we called them the Killer B’s.

Donna, good luck selling your house, moving AND getting a wonderful new rescue!

My puggie was named Angel.  A few of her nicknames were:  Angelina, beebee, babygirl, moomoo, booboo, the sweetest little girl in the whole wide world (I know, for a nickname it was a mouthful!  lol). We got her Christmas 1998.  We lost her to cancer June 2012. We are still pugless, but have a rescue kitty now named Callie Marie. I call her little mimi kitty, baby kitty and babygirl.

Happy Friday!

My pugs are Butch and Sundance…my little outlaws.  Butch prefers to be called just Butch…I call Sundance baby girl, and Sunny…

Sleighbelle

09/25/2015

Sleighbelle had several nicknames.  Pooterpants (not for anything she did, I just liked the sound of it), Smoochieface was another that I used a lot.

Birdybelle came to me deaf, so while I continued to talk to her everyday (in case should could hear a little),I always tried to call her Birdybelle so that if she did hear me she would learn her name and not be confused with multiple names.

How cool…the nicknames question was my question..so glad Martha asked for a follow up:)

We have three pugs now…

Vito-we started with pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie which became pie boy and pie. Then from the sweet potato part we got spud, spud pug and spuddy. Then there is Vito Las Vegas…from Viva Las Vegas…and yes, you sing it just like Elvis did! There is also Vito baby sunshine as he is my pugshine and I always call him my “special boy”.

Olive-I should preface this by saying that as much as we love her she can be a spiteful little “B”. Case in point…she does NOT like getting her teeth brushed…one night after my husband had brushed her teeth he was in the bathroom getting ready for bed. Olive jumped up on our bed and must have pushed the sheets down with her head. She then proceeded to poop on his side of the bed and then sat next to it waiting for him to come out of the bathroom. When he did she looked down at the poop then up at him as if to say…“this is what you get when you brush my teeth Daddy!”. So, she is queen “B”, little “B” and busy “B”...she even has a collar with bees on it! I also call her precious girl and princess princess pug.

Luigi-we just adopted him about 2 months ago. We changed his name from Pugsley to Luigi. So far he is Lui, Lucky Lui and weegee:)

Janice Webb

My male pug is Webb’s Pugsley Pal aka Snuggles aka Snug Bug aka Brother.  My female pug is Webb’s Velvet Ace aka Sassy aka Sassifras.  My box mix is Dixie aka Dixie Darling aka Big Girl aka Chompy.

Nick and Nora were named after the Thin Man characters (love those old movies).

Nick was the tallest and thinnest Pug at every Pug event we ever attended, so his first nickname was “Nick the Toothpick”. That was shortened to Nick the Pick”. Then came Nicky, Picky, and Nicholas J. Pug.

Nora was a take charge kinda gal, but she had a soft side too. Here are her nicknames: Miss Nora, Nora Pug, Baby Pug, Babushka, Baby Babushka, and Boo - Boo.

I have loved reading about everyone’s beloved Pets and their names. So many funny and cute ones out there! They are OUR babies after-all!

I’m really enjoying reading all the nicknames of our precious fur babies!

I realized I forgot some.  I also call him Benner-wenner.  And whenever I’m leaving, I pick up my purse and go tell him goodbye saying, “See you later Ben-a-gator”, sometimes adding “After while, Ben-a-dial.”

Deb

09/25/2015

Smokey: we call him old man or mokey
Fiona is Fifi, or feef a leaf
Penelope is called “teeny meany peeney, cuz she’s a little bully
We never call them by their real names, I think they’d be confused if we did!

Sue (Pen & Lucy's Mommy)

09/25/2015

Lucy is short for Luciana but she’s also called Lucy-doodle, Sweet Girl and, of course, Princess.
Pen is short for Penfold (a character in an older British cartoon called “Danger Mouse”)and he’s also called Buddy, PugPen and Snuggle-pug.
And both of them are often called Goober-generally when they’re being goofy or misbehaving!

Dyanne Wallace

Love all these ridiculous names we have for our puggies. Seems no matter how we start out, the silly shines through, and we end up like Ann calling her pug “The Exalted World Dominator.” Also enjoyed Christie’s story about her “exalted” Olive who shows her retaliation by pooping on her husband’s side of the bed. What wonderful personalities.
My pug’s name was Ozzie a.k.a. Little Boy. Even as he grew to a hefty 27 lbs., he was still Little Boy.

Sara

—Katie. Kate-Kate. Katie-kins. Katie Porkchop. Katharine when she’s naughty. Miss Katie-kins when she’s especially adorable, which is most of the time.

I’m a little late to the party but we have nicknames too.

Pip’s full name was Peregrin Took. Ann, did I spell that right? Thats why we named him Pip. Fool of a Took was used quite often as well! But we also called him Peep, Peeper, Pippy Mac-a-doo, Pipster and my favorite was Mr. Pug Pug.

Bella came to us as Berta but we changed it to Bella. I chose Bella Luna after sweet Luna. So she is often called Looney or Looney Tunes. Bells, Belly, Bella Luna, Mama, princess, Mommy’s girl.

Annie is a fool! Ha! Annie-a-nannie, Annie Banannie, Ana Rose, Trouble, princess, little puppy, baby, Daddy’s girl.

I loved reading all of these! Great names everyone.

Steve Lindhurst

Her name is Dolly, with some pet names: Lil Sweet Pertater, Dolly Baby, Baby, Little Fat Pug, Sweet Girl, Hard Headed Little Brat, My Sweet Girl.  The list goes on.  I think many of them we make up as we go.  Either way, she is the light of our lives.  Just so one doesn’t get the wrong idea, we have plenty of pet names for our other “non-pug” dog, who is equally loved. Spoiled rotten, the two of them!!!
