Leash Management

Luna

Whenever I am out alone with all 3 pugs, I always use their 6 foot leashes.  With three energetic pugs, there is no way I can manage 3 retractable leashes.  The only issue with the 6 foot leashes is that Luna has horrible leash management skills.  I thought Henry was forever getting tangled, but my opinion quickly changed when we adopted Luna.

Once the pugs settle into the walk, the leashes normally drag a little bit on the ground and this is where Luna gets herself all tied up.  The boys step over the leash or let it pass all the way under them, but Luna she always ends up getting her paws tied up with the leash.  We are forever stopping so that I can untangle her which really annoys Ben and makes him pull on the leash, which is his way of saying, “keep up slowpokes!”

To solve the issue, I have tried taking the slack out of Luna’s leash and not letting it drag on the ground.  But then she will get tangled up in one of the boy’s leashes.  So in order to make it a block without having to free Luna, I have to keep the slack out of all three of the leashes.  Which pretty much means, I am doing all the work of the retractable leash.

Oh, you should just see us out and about.  It’s good for a laugh.

What about those leash couplers they have so you can walk multiple dogs on one leash. You hook the ends to two of the dogs harnesses or collars, and then there is a d-ring at the apex where you hook the leash. I don’t know if they make them for anymore than two, but it would eliminate at least one leash out of three for you. Maybe something to check into.

I can’t imagine you getting very far that way.  I’m sure your neighbors must wait to see you coming down the street with 3 pugs in tow.
Happy weekend everyone.
Looking forward to the flashback Saturday and the fashion show Sunday.

Three pugs are manageable with two on one “y” connecting leash, the third on its own.  That’s how it was when I only had the three girls.  Now, with four, I’ve got the two well-mannered girls together, and the two “wild ones” on their own individual leashes.  It’s total mayhem!  With cooler weather, I’m hoping to work with them more, but I often take the path of least resistance and walk only two at a time.  When I do venture out with all four, some neighbors have commented that all I need is a chariot to complete the picture!

I’m picturing something like a team of pugs capable of pulling you on a sled….or maybe a skateboard!  But I’d really love to see Dottie and her four-pug chariot team!

Excellent double and triple bungie leashes can be found at larzpetgear.com.  They are not cheap, but worth every penny when walking several pups at once.

I can picture Ben tugging on the leash!  You have my sympathy walking 3 pugs.  Walking 2 is enough of a challenge for me. Sometimes I walk them 1 at a time.  I often think of entering the Iditarod with our 2.  They are SO strong, and since they aren’t well trained at walking calmly or heeling and all that stuff, we just keep an eye out for any other dog in the neighborhood. They are both gonna head that way and then it’s them walking me. lol of course, if they decide to start playing chase with each other, even having hubby along doesn’t help much.  I always seem to end up looking like a Maypole.

Great mental picture!  MY favorite thing with leashes is taking them to the vet and they go under and around the chairs and are so bloomin’ tangled up that I just laugh, drop the leash and wait for them to come out on their own!!

As always love the pics & stories of the “3 Pugateers”. I have been researching dog steps and wondered if anyone has any recommendations.
Thanks!
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I cannot imagine trying to walk more than one pug at a time.  I definately would end up looking like a maypole!
The vision of the chariot leaves me laughing, very cool image.
Have a good weekend everyone!
Pugs n kisses from NS

Perhaps this is Luna’s way of saying: “Hey, I’m just a little girl and I should be walked alone!  No stinkin’ boys needed!”

Aww…Luna is so cute. Sorry, I can’t help you much with the leash management. Our dogs are on very short leashes so that they learn to heel. I walk Napoleon and Terry walks Ruki.

I’ve spent too long searching for the ultimate photo of leash management, to no avail, so I’ve posted a more modest example from last fall.  It was taken not long before dear Maggie passed in her sleep at the age of 14 1/2, but she was still raring to go!  And people’s doubletakes were truly priceless.

Aw - the leash dance! And God forbid you run into a fellow dog..I have my two on retractable leashes and am constantly switching them behind me or in front of me - around street signs etc….
LOL! I want video of you and the 3 pugateers!

It must be a female pug thing with getting tangled. I have 3 pugs and a Shih Tzu. Wheezy is the only female and a pug and she loves to whirl around. The only time she walks in a staight line is when she’s tired. I tried a coupler and she almost strangled my black pug, Charlie.

I bought a coupler for Giggs and Mea and it works great.  The only problem is that Giggs is still has a few pounds on Mea so sometimes he can end up pulling her off her feet.
