Dirty Wrinkles

Benjamin

Look at Benny’s dirty face!  When Benny chews, he has marathon chewing sessions.  I don’t know exactly what he does during that time, but his face gets absolutely filthy!

The worst part is that as soon as he catches a whiff of the smelly malacetic wipes that we use to clean his face his belly hits the floor and he hides his face.  Too bad Benny doesn’t understand cause and effect.  If you chew your bone for 3 hours straight, then your face will get dirty.  When your face is dirty I will need to use a smelly wipe to clean it.  Makes perfect sense!

Although, chewing isn’t the only culprit in Benny’s dirty wrinkles.  Out of the four pugs, his wrinkles get the dirtiest and they get dirty very quickly.  I think it is because he is so driven by his nose and he always has his face stuck in the grass or in the sofa cushions or wherever he might be smelling.  Plus, his wrinkles are deep.  We could easily clean his wrinkles everyday, but since he isn’t really fond of the cleaning and I’m not really too keen on it either, I clean them every couple of days or when his face starts to look like it does in the picture.

Jade Dog’s Wrinkle gets so dirty we call it the Stinkle.  It totally fits.  And she HATES having hers cleaned too.  The guilt associated with teh cleaning of the stinkle is almost insurmountable, so I definitely empathize with you!!!

We use the term “stinkle”, too… stinky wrinkle! Charlie has a “stinkle” wash every morning when we instill his eye drops. He’s not fond of the process, however, he tolerates it because he gets a treat for his efforts!

Aw mom, they don’t bother me, why do we have to go through this all the time?

I have been very fortunate with all my puggies.  None of them have ever had an issue with their wrinkles.  Romeo is especially a great little guy with this.

Gee whiz mom, can’t you find something less smelly? How about a lavender sachet? We are very lucky too that Beauty does not have deep or many wrinkles. And here lately, Daisey washes Beauty’s face and Beauty washes Daisey’s ears-clean pup faces at our house!

I have heard the term “Stinkles” on this site before, and my husband & I use it to refer to the stinky wrinkles as well.. too cute.. the name.

On another note, I need some input.. I am having a problem with Mr. Skittles. He lifts his legs and pees wherever!!  I take him out and he will pee at least 3 times, and minutes later back in the house, he goes again, not all the time, but it has been an on going issue, and I do not know what to do.
I have to keep him in his puppy crate when I am away, because if he is left out, this will occur, and I don’t want to crate him if I don’t have to.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Pat, how old is Mr. Skittles?  Is he in good heath?  My sweet baby Birdy would do the same thing and the vet discovered that she did not have the muscle strength to empty her bladder completly and that was causing her to tinkle all over the house. He showed me a very simple way to massage her bladder area and then she would tinkle and empty her bladder and the endless tinkles around the house ended.  You might ask your vet about this.

About these dirty pug faces…Sleighbelle has the same issue when she is really working a chewie.  And if I don’t clean her face soon enough after the chewing, it dries on her face and that makes for a really unhappy pug washing.  I just tell her, if ya do the chew, ya gotta do the wash!

Annabelle has the “stinkle” too!  And her’s is like Benny’s too where I have to clean it a couple times a week.  I just don’t understand how it gets so dirty so quickly!  And oh man, if I ever slack and let it go a couple of days without cleaning…look out!  I swear she could hide a buried treasure in her stinkle smile

When I clean C.J. and Toeby’s wrinkles, I use a baby wipe.  They smell much better and do a thorough job.  The vet recommended this…
C.J. has taken to lifting his leg in the house also and I think he usually does it when he’s mad at us for leaving him!  If anyone out there has a suggestion for eliminating in-the-house peeing, I’d love to hear it!

Thanks Sleighbelle.  Mr. Skittles just turned 2 in January.  When he was a few months old, he had a bladder infection, and it cleared up nicely, but now it is a nightmare, that I am sure can be fixed up, if I can get some direction how to proceed with this.

Pat, before we found out that Birdy was not emptying her bladder, she seemed to always have an infection also.  Maybe the infection he had as a baby weakened his bladder?  I don’t know, just guessing.  I would definitely talk to the doc about this.  Also, before we discovered Birdy’s real issue, there was some talk about a pill that can help with this.  I don’t remember the details, since that wasn’t her situation; you might ask your vet about that.  I just had all the carpet in the house replaced, thanks to little miss Birdy’s tinkle-fest!  But the house looks great!

We use baby wipes, too….non-alchohal type.
They work great and they don’t smell horrible. I like the one’s with aloe just for a little extra skin conditioning that definately doesn’t hurt.
If they’re gentle enough for a baby’s bottom, they’re great for a Pug’s face!
And they’re good for cleaning muddy paws before coming in the house, and wiping off eye buggers, too.

Pat,
Abbey was doing the same thing (peeing in the house), even though she is a girl.  It was due to a bladder infection.  We went to the vet, got it cleared up, but they found she had crystals in her bladder.  This sometimes made it hurt to go, so she wouldn’t finish, and then go in the house…  Anyway, she is now on a special prescription diet.  She cannot have or tolerate any treats because of the bacteria which live on/in it.  So, check with your vet, but it might be something larger.  (I know!  A pug without any treats at all!  Can you believe the nerve?  Now we just use the dog food as her “treats”.  She doesn’t really care, food is food!)  Dogs also don’t really get mad at you for leaving, according to Caesar, so, there is probably an underlying issue.

I have never had the “stinkle” problem thank goodness although I use the baby wipes for everything. Annabelle my Pug gets her face, wrinkles, bottom and whatever else washed with baby wipes they are wonderful.
I also have a small poodle that has a tinkle problem he just can’t hold “it” until morning when we let them out. So he wears male “Diapers” it is like heat pants for female dogs only this just wraps around his middle, where the problem is on male dogs. I own a few of these and pop them in the wash when needed. It is like having a child in training pants as these little guys are my kids smile

Thank you all for your input.  I will defiantely be talking to our vet about this and see what she thinks about Mr. Skittles problem.
Appreciate the feed back.

Yes, thank you for the feedback, all!  C.J. also had a bladder infection but we treated it with antibiotics.  He also had a lot of crystals and his pH was way off.  The vet said she thought it might be the Wellness diet I was feeding him.  Soooo, he’s now on a prescription diet also and goes back for follow up on the 18th of March.  I’m not sure that’s what’s causing him to pee in the house though.  Will ask the vet when we go back to see her.
