Catch-22

Sol

As the months pass we are learning more and more how to communicate with Sol. Sol isn't just hard of hearing, she is completely deaf. At first I wasn't convinced, but after observing her since she arrived there have been numerous occasions when she doesn't even flinch an ear when loud sounds occur.

The main thing that we have learned is that Sol is very in tune with vibrations. Before we learned this, if she was looking away and we wanted to get her attention we would have to walk over to her and giver he a little tap so she would look our way. But through a little experimentation we quickly learned that if you stomp your feet, she will pick up on the vibrations and turn your way.

The only problem with the stomp your feet attention method is that it freaks Luna out. Feet stomping, kicking, or any other sudden movement with your feet causes Luna to immediately drop to the floor, her bellying touching the ground, and cower. The fast moving feet issue is the lone issue that has carried over from her previous life. As an added bonus, Luna has very poor vision, which makes it even easier to startle the little one.

So, the method to get the deaf dog's attention sends the blind dog into a panic.

As much as I love the feet stomping method to get Sol's attention, you can only use it if you are 100% sure that Luna is not in the room. I feel like a Venn Diagram is in order to help illustrate when it is appropriate to use the feet stomping method to get Sol's attention. Then I could file it away with all the eye drops spreadsheets we have for Luna.

At first I thought what a wonderful solution for little Sol and then I kept reading.  Poor Luna must really have had a horrible previous life.  This really does put you in between a rock and a hard place.  The more I read about OBP the more I admire you for your dedication and hard work.  Give those sweeties a kiss and a hug from me.

Sol looks like she is seeing something scary! Or maybe she is just worried that if you stomp sister Luna will get scared. Not to worry lil Sol-Mom has things well in control!

You are such a GOOD mom to the puggies.  I admire you and am so happy they are in your care.  I enjoy seeing the daily pictures and your stories.  There are two puggie momma’s here at work and puggie momma’s in my family and I forward the pics every day.  Thank you for your priceless website.

Your Venn Diagram analogy made me laugh!

Is there maybe another source of vibration you could use that wouldn’t scare sweet little Luna?  Maybe a little wall-pounding?

what about a flashlight to get Sol’s attention?  Or a vibration collar?

That breaks my heart…such trials and tribulations to contend with.  Luna is obviously afraid of feet, poor thing!  But she is in a definitely kinder and gentler place thank Heaven!  Sol is so precious…What about slapping your hand on the floor?  Would that work?

Luna is very much like my Tina.  I often wish I had a big stick so I could beat whoever put the fear of god into these precious dogs!

Oh the things we do for our puggies smile  Sol is so precious!  Would clapping work?  I don’t even want to imagine what caused Luna to have that reaction to feet stomping!  But she is in the lap of rescue luxury now, along with Miss Sol!  And the girls have their brothers to teach them how to be spoiled pugs smile

Seeing the comments I had to add one more-it breaks my heart to think any animal is abused. These are such loving babes-our beloved Buttons(Boston)was a pup when we got her, but when she’d hear a newspaper noise she’d cower. I am so happy that Luna & SOl have such a loving home to be in! Thank heaven for you and this great web-site!

I know it’s hard as i have four pugs and the two are deaf and blind i usually tap them a little or when feeding i tap their food dishes on the floor and i always feed them in the same spot.I also do the clap thing or i’ll take one of their toys and roll it in front of them and they’ll turn towards me.It takes awhile to see what works best for you but,i know you have to be careful with luna.I know you’ll find that thing that will work for you, your luna and sol are so sweet.

A friend of mine has a deaf kitty and when she and her husband want him to come in they use a flashlight.
I’m not sure what they do during the day. Maybe a laser pointer would do the trick, provided it didn’t stir up the other three…
Good luck!

I was reading a comment on “three woofs and a woo” and someone said you can get special vibrating collars for deaf dogs, they have different pulses and stuff.
