Can You Hear Me Now?

Henry

We have been noticing that Henry's hearing has not been as sharp lately. Even with duller hearing, Henry shines in the hearing department compared to Benjamin and Luna who are practically completely deaf. But, one day last week we noticed that Henry was not being his normal self and we noticed that he couldn't hear anything at all. Later that day he started scratching his ears like crazy and we had a sneaking suspicion that he had an ear infection. So, off to the vet we went and the vet confirmed that Henry did indeed have an ear infection. Henry was prescribed ear drops to tackle the infection and we vowed to be more diligent about cleaning his ears.

The hope is that after Henry's ear infection is cleared up, his hearing will return to normal. Although, I must admit, I'm kinda concerned that it won't since there hasn't been any improvement so far.

Feel better soon,  Henry.  Hope the drops do the trick.  Genevieve has lost most of her hearing, too. She will be 12 in Aug.

I hope the drops help him, too.

Is hearing loss with age something that pugs are more prone to than other breeds?

We had the same thing happen with Lucy. I fussed at her for two weeks, thinking that she was just being obstinate and ignoring me every time I called her. We finally figured out she couldn’t hear AT ALL! Had her in to the vet for something else and found out she had a double ear infection as well. But after 10 days on antibiotics and drops her hearing came back completely! I bet Henry’s will come back too.

The ear drops need time to do their magic. Ear infections in pugs are sometimes hard to clear up, but your good care and attention will certainly help Handsome Henry.

Hope Henry’s hearing problem clears up, but if not pugs are resilient and brilliant.  Meiling
( 14 years old) lost both her eyesight and hearing this past year.  She relies on both her senses of smell and touch and gets around beautifully!  Pugs are the most determined little dogs!!!!

Please let me know if Henrys hearing comes back at all. My 10 year old pug is going through the same thing.  He was just treated for and ear infection.  Our Dr said it could be just old age.  But im hoping his hearing will come back.

Rosco, our 12 year old , has been losing his hearing little by little.  We took him to the vet yesterday and they cleaned out his ears (lots of nasty stuff) the rest of yesterday and all day today, it seems his hearing is now completely gone. He is miserable !  Not himself and responds to nothing. At least before , if you yelled loud enough, he would look around to see where that noise was coming from.  He is also pawing at his ears.  He another appointment tomorrow. We can only hope some ear drops or antibiotics will clear this up. We are worried sick.

I have your Rosco in my prayers.  Once his ears feel better (apparently they don’t right now) he will be a happier pug.  Chin up.

So Rosco went in today for a more thorough exam. We were told it is not uncommon for older Pugs to lose their hearing.  We were given drops and ear wash but no encouragement as to the return of his hearing. Good news is…he has done a 180 degree turnaround and now seems back to his old, normal, silly self. He depends on our hand signals and takes cues from his 4 year old female companion, Daisy (black Pug).
Our thought is this…because of his age, I am grateful that if Rosco had to lose one of his senses, it is his hearing.

Glad Rosco is adjusting so well!
My eleven year old pug, Maisy has been suffering with double ear infections.  She has been on two sets of antibiotics and two different types of ear drops.  Her hearing loss seems to be directly connected to her ear infections. It has deeply saddened me, and I’m hoping that once her ear infections are cured, she’ll have at least some of her hearing restored.  It’s frustrating to see such little improvement following weeks of treatment.  Still trying to figure out what she could be allergic to that led to these infections.

Hope Rosco is doing well. It is with great sadness that I share Daisey our Boston has crossed over the rainbow bridge 5/21/16. To say our/my heart is aching would be an understatement. In my mind I know she is bouncing, playing, running like she was a pup again-but my heart hasn’t caught up with my mind. I will get to bring Daisey home soon and I will keep her with me always. RIP my sweet Daisey Doodle Girl. Pug hugs from pastor sue & the Colorado 2
