Ask OBP #2

Ask OBP is our attempt at trying to better respond to questions we get asked. So, don't forget to post your question in the comments.

Benjamin, Henry and Luna

We start this week with out first question from Ann, who asked how old Mimo is. (And to clarify, Mimo is the name of the tree we have in our back yard. It is a mimosa tree and we just decided to name her Mimo.)

Good question, Ann. Mimo started as a seed. The seed came from a seed pod from a far away neighbor's home. We started to grow Mimo in very late 2006. The first attempt befell a weed wacker accident. So, early in 2007 we began trying again to sprout the perfect Mimo. And by April 2007, Mimo had made it from a paper cup to a pot. So, as of this writing, we can Mimo was "born" in 2007 and is about 8 1/2 years old now. Here are links to previous posts about Mimo. Planting Mimo, Enjoying Mimo and Mimo. Thank you for your question Ann! G'Pa calls Mimo a weed and not a tree and we can't say he is far from wrong judging by how quickly she grew!

The next question came from Christine, who asked why pugs?

This is a good one, Christine! My gut reply was "Is there any other breed? Because they are the coolest dogs EVER!" But it does go deeper than that and while we are both animal lovers, one of us could stray from the breed more than the other. But the fact is that I feel in love with a 2 year old pug when I was visiting my sister. When we still lived in Maryland and my sister was already living in Florida, I was on a visit and her boys were playing T-ball. At that game there was a pug. He was the cutest, silliest, spunkiest little dog I had ever met! I had never forgotten him and how he just instantly warmed my heart. Later I fell in love with the movie Milo & Otis (although re-watching it recently I did not really enjoy it). The pug in that movie also "talked to me" and after researching them and learning more about their quirks and temperament, I knew that pugs were right for me. I eventually shared my passion with my family and friends and now we share our pug passion to all the others out there that got bitten by pug love bug. Thanks, Christine! Glad you asked!

We also had some interest in OBP supplying readers with recipes. We will work on making that another post exclusively about recipes. And when we do that we will touch more on the portions we serve(d) our pups, too (that request came from Alayna).

Another question, from Chuckie, was asked about the interest in the featured pug pic. Chuckie is noticing a trend that this has not seemed as popular as it once was. We will leave this question up to readers. Are you all still viewing this but maybe just not commenting as much? Or are you getting bored of pug cuteness?! We have learned a lot about those who comment vs. those who lurk. There are about 10-20 people who lurk to every one person that comments. So, please chime in and give us some feedback while helping to answer Chuckie's question.

Our last question was about how Puppia brand harnesses measure. Can some of you all chime in on that, too and help Jen C? Since it has been years since we have had to buy a harness we are too far out of the loop to help on this one. Readers, please offer your knowledge!

All great questions. We will do our best to answer as many as possible. We also wanted to post a reminder that we are not veterinarians. If we post about medical things, it is from our experience and not training or other credentials. Thanks everyone! And keep the questions coming!

Lurker 99%.....Reader 110%!!!! My personal opinion about the puppia harness is that I love them and I feel its very comfortable for the pugs. There are other brands but they are not quite up to snuff. Spend the extra couple of bucks and stick w the puppia.

Reader every day.  Commenter about 50%.  I love reading about the OBP adventures and mourned the loss of Sol, Benny, and Luna as if they were my own.  I haven’t had a pug of my own for a couple of years (I lost my Sleighbelle after 15 years), so coming here, seeing the pictures and reading the stories helps me get my pug fix!  Corrine, thanks for all you do to share your pug family.

I have been reading OBP since y’all still lived in Maryland. I don’t always comment because I feel very boring most of the time. But I have to say this is my favorite blog that I read and I always look at the pics. My Genevieve turned 14 on August 1. She is totally deaf now but still a ring-tailed tooter and rules our little household. Love OBP!!

So many nice topics!

Why pugs is a sweet thing to think about.  I like your phrase “bitten by the pug love bug”!  I bet that sums it up for all of us!

About the puppia size, I have Bennie in size large, and it works for his 26.5 pound body.  For a pug, Bennie has a large frame, however our vet just “informed” me that he needs to lose 2 pounds.  So I don’t know what size a smaller pug would need.

I really love the featured pug picture, and I don’t have a reason why I don’t comment there.  But I will say that I enjoy them and hope they continue!

And I’ll end with:  #ILoveMimo

Thank you so much for your upcoming post regarding your special recipes!  Looking forward to it!

And thank you for the Q&A posts - I think they are a lot of fun!

Even though I don’t always comment, I love looking at the pictures every day and think you always post great shots and narratives!  Checking your site every morning is my favourite activity!  Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks again!

I read everyday and comment just about everyday on the posts. It’s actually the first thing I look for when I check my email in the morning:) I always look at the pug pic but don’t always comment on that.

Thanks for answering my question. I fell in love with pugs in a similar fashion…it was when one of my friend’s brother got a pug for their mother…Sophia the pug:)

I read everyday too, and check out the featured Pug pic (always cute BTW). I comment sometimes, but even when I don’t I enjoy reading what my fellow OBP fans write.

I’m like Sleighbelle, I lost my two Pugs after 13 and 14 years and come here for my Puggy fix as well!

Love your stories, love the daily Pug pics, love it all!

I’ve been a fan for probably at least 10 years and I read the post EVERYDAY.  I probably commented and submitted pictures the first 5 years, but then just got too busy with life, thus becoming a lurker 😉.  I love all the stories, daily pictures, and the caption this post.  And I like the new question part.  OBP is how I start my day every morning 😃

I’m a lurker for the most part, but I love your blog and everyone else’s pug photos.  We at one point also had four pugs: little black Lucy (a Solsey lookalike!) and fawn rescue Opal, fawn “conventional” Daphne, and fawn rescue #2 Uma.  Sadly, our grumble’s down to two, Daphne and Uma, having lost Opal to cancer the day after Memorial Day this year.  Please keep the pugnesium flowing!

Great post.

I love Benny, Luna and Henry under Mimo.  If Mimo is a weed, she is an attractive weed.

My very first pug came to me in 1963 after our Amber (mixed breed) was lost.  The landlord’s mil told me she heard a gun shot in the wooded area behind us the day Amber disappeared.  I had never seen a pug before and fell in love with him at the pet shop (this before we learned about puppy mills).  George and I fell in love with him.  He went everywhere with us.  When he died, I realized I was addicted and it was not long another pug gave us love.

There has been at least one pug in the family since then, along with a beagle, rat terrier, German shepherd, Brittany, greyhound, min pin (whom I took in when my sister died),and of course Princess Annie Fannie Allysum, monkey doodles wild woman.  I have loved each of these babies, but I have had to have a pug always in the mix.

I look at the featured pug picture everyday and comment 99.5% of the time.  I think they all deserve recognition.  Annie has been a featured pug three times and she loves it when I show her picture on the computer and tell her she is the pug of the day.  She looks at me with that “what do you mean I am the pug of the day?  I am THE pug every single day”.

I wish I could find a harness that Annie cannot get out of.  I like the Puppia, but she always managed to get out of it.  I also bought a harness (darn, can’t remember the name of it) that wraps around the dogs’ body in a specific way.  It works but it is not truly a harness. It is more like a harness/leash and so I have to have another harness on.

So now that I have rambled on, I have a question.  Does anyone know of a harness a pug cannot get out of?  I really need to find something, because when I have to take Annie anywhere, it is too hard for me to carry her and I can’t trust her in a harness.  She once escaped in a parking lot and she thought it was a game when I reached out to get her; she ran off.  Thank goodness I had help getting her.  That freaked me out and I no longer walk her because of that.  I went to a pug picnic and because the house was uphill, one of the family members took her leash and walked her.  Guess what?  She wrangled out of it.

While I don’t always comment (I do try!) I absolutely enjoy seeing those adorable pugs of the day.  Every one is truly unique and beautiful!  Some very talented people commenting, I often laugh out loud reading them.  And I love reading the adventures of Henry and his continuing road to good health.  I can’t help but laugh when I read that Henry is outsmarting the cameras.  Silly pugs!

Love seeing the pics and comments. Don’t think my day would be the same without them. Thanks to our grandson-we got bit by the pug bug, too, when we had Beauty come into our life. Then came Solsie who is still with us-Beauty is staying with our daughter till Daisey goes to the Rainbow Bridge as Beauty decided she didn’t like Daisey anymore. Love my fur babies! I am afraid I have always been a lurker, but I do read OBP every day and really look forward to it. My baby girl, Puyi, left earth 10 years ago and since I now also live alone, I have never brought in another pug. I still miss her every day but I spend way too much time at work to be fair to another pug—but looking forward to Social Security time when I can work part time and have more time to spend with a puggie! It won’t be long now, but in the meantime, I follow you guys!

Guess I’d have to call myself a “lurker”, sounds kinda obscene.  I just don’t very often have anything interesting to say.

So wonderful to hear from so many people who still read every day. It warms my heart. It’s a great group (human and canine, plus a couple cats!) we have here. Thank you, Corinne, for making it all possible!

#lurker
Question - I’ve submitted pug photos for pug of the day and do not see them in the pug pics could it be because I use a Mac?
Have loved my daily pug pic in my inbox every morning for years.

Lurker 85% of the time. I comment when I think I can add something of substance; don’t want to be boring. But I read every day (and have for many years) and look forward to seeing what Henry is up to. Thank you for allowing us in to your lives.
