Playing at the beach

Playing at the beach

There is just something about the sand that gets everyone fired up and ready to run.  Every time we go to the beach, the pugs run in and out of the water and all around the beach.  They run hard and they play hard.  In the picture above, Luna is in the process of pouncing on Benny and shortly after she lands, Henry is going to pommel both of them.

Before we adopted Luna they told us that she was just a little girl.  I wasn’t concerned at first because I thought it would be cool to have a little one running around and I really didn’t think she would be much smaller than Baby Benny.  However, when I met her, all that kept running through my head was this girl is tiny.  Both of the boys tower over her!  Soaking wet Luna only weighs about 12lbs and Henry has at least 10lbs on her.

After meeting Luna and seeing how tiny she is and knowing how rough the boys play I became very concerned and I was just sure that the boys were going to hurt Luna while everyone was playing.  My worries were all put to rest the first moment the three of them started playing.  Luna is a spitfire!  She is quick, agile, extremely flexible and possibly plays the roughest of the three.

The beach is a great place for her to let loose and burn off some of her energy.  The boys just love to have her chase them and I am glad that she doesn’t make it easy on them.  She really keeps the boys on their toes.

Leash Management

Luna's poor leash management

From the moment I took hold of Luna’s leash when we adopted her, I knew that this girl was not used to being walked on a leash.  When she is on a leash she just bounds along bobbing and weaving between people and objects paying no mind to the cord that is attached to her back.  As a result, she frequently ends up wrapped around things like trees, bushes and fire hydrants.

At the beach the other night, she circled this stick until she ran out of leash.  At that point she just stood there looking at us like, “I did it again, can I get a little help over here?”  We of course complied.

Her leash skills have improved since we got her, but we definitely still have a lot of work to do with her.

Happy 4th of July

Happy Independence Day

Happy Independence Day!  Hope everyone has off work and can enjoy the day.  We got things kicked off last night by going to the beach.  Today we plan on going to a cookout and just spending some time hanging around the house with the boys and Luna.

Happy 4th of July!

Pumpkin Bread

Benjmain waiting for pumpkin bread

Saying that Benjamin loves pumpkin bread would be a huge understatement.  The boy goes crazy for pumpkin bread.  He can’t control himself.  He has even scratched at the oven door while the bread was baking!  And when the bread is cooling on the counter you pretty much have to take him out of the house because he will whine, bark, claw and scratch at the counter to get to the bread.

Whenever anyone has a slice you always have to cut a small sliver for Baby Benny, Henry and Luna.  Henry and Luna are very fond of pumpkin bread as well, but not in such a crazy way.

Once it is time for the bread to be put away, you need to be pretty creative.  If you just put the bread in the pantry or any other cabinet, Benjamin will spend all of his time whining and barking at the pumpkin bread.  The boy has a great nose and if the bread is anywhere in the kitchen he will find it!  So we have to resort to hiding the pumpkin bread in odd places around the house, like say in the guest room closet.  I’m just waiting for the day when someone comes over and opens a closet in my house and finds a loaf of pumpkin bread sitting in such an odd place.  It may take me awhile to explain that one.

The Cat’s Shadow

Benjmain in the cat's basket

All the four legged creatures in the house have their favorite napping spots.  Occasionally, one of them will switch things up, but for the most part each one of them sticks to their tried and tested napping spot.

The cat’s favorite place to sleep is in a wicker basket on my desk.  She loves that basket and has even started sleeping in it when I am not in my office, which is extremely rare for her because she always likes to be in the same room as someone in the house.

The other day, Benjamin was sitting in my lap while I was working at my desk.  The cat was prowling around the house and her desktop basket was vacant.  In the blink of an eye, Benjamin leaped from my lap onto my desk and into the cat’s basket.  In a matter of seconds he settled and was ready to take a nap while I typed away at my desk.  The first thing I did was look for the cat.  If she saw Benjamin in her basket she would have a fit.  She couldn’t stand to have pug fur in her basket!  As luck would have it, I had another wicker basket.  I quickly grabbed it out of the closest and sat it on my desk next to the cat’s basket.  With a little coaxing, Benjamin made himself comfortable in his very own basket and while the cat wasn’t looking I brushed all of the dog germs out of her basket.  So now I have two wicker baskets on my desk.  Needless to say things sure are getting a little cramped.

I’m not really sure why, but Benjamin really likes to emulate whatever the cat does.  It is really sweet, but it drives the cat nuts.  She isn’t really interested in having a pug follow her around all day and nap in favorite sleeping spots.

Cuddle Buddy

Henry the best Cuddle Buddy

Benjamin and Luna just love to cuddle with Henry.  Henry rarely naps alone because either Benjamin or Luna or both of them is snuggled up next to him.  Before we adopted Luna I just assumed that Benjamin always cuddled up with Henry because he was the only other pug.  But it has been interesting to see how Luna has bonded with him and how she seeks him out if there is no human lap available.

I think both Benjamin and Luna like to snuggle up to Henry because he is the largest of the three.  Also, he lays very still.  He doesn’t fidget and when he makes himself comfortable he is usually in that position for quite some time.  Also, it doesn’t bother him to have others laying on him.  You could pile anything on him and as long as he is comfortable he isn’t going to budge.

Way back, before adopting a third was even a thought, I snapped this picture of Benjamin and Henry napping.  As you can see, Benjamin is laying completely on top of Henry and Henry isn’t the least bit concerned.
