Pugsgiving and Pugkin Bread

Ann & Benjamin

This weekend we traveled about Central and Southern Florida to 2 Pug Events.  The first one was Pugsgiving in Lakeland, Florida.  This event was quite fun for the humans but it was super special for the pugs, especially Baby Benny.  You see, Benjamin has a special admirer.  Her name is Ann.  She is with Central Florida Pug Rescue and a loyal blog reader.  After reading about the many adventures of Benjamin’s famous pumpkin bread obsession, Ann offered up her famous loaves!  She specially made Benjamin 2 loaves of pumpkin bread.  Oh, but there weren’t just 2 loaves for Baby Benny!  She made 2 loaves for each of the pugs!  How awesome is that?  It was so sweet of her do that!  As soon as we got to Ann’s booth, Benjamin’s sniffer began going a mile a minute.  Then she presented him with the bread and he got that curiously excited look on his face.  He smelled it and was like “Is that for me?!”

Ann & Benjamin

It was so funny, too because not only did she bake the loaves of bread special for them but she wrapped it all pretty with a nice green bow and a tag with Benjamin’s photo from one of the latest blogs (the one with his ear inside out.)  It was so kind!  Ann shared with us that how on the first attempt to make the pumpkin bread her own puggies jumped onto the table and snagged the original loaf.  So, it must not be only our Benjamin who goes hunting for pumpkin bread.

Pugkin Bread

We gave each of the pugs a little piece for the car ride and then the rest went in the back.  It made the next few hours in the car on the way to Miami a little difficult, though because Benjamin would go through bouts of whining and scratching toward the way back as he begged for the remaining pumpkin bread.  When we finally arrived in Miami, they received another little piece and then we had to find somewhere else to stow the tasty treat.  We ended up triple bagging it and then storing it in the hotel room safe where Benjamin couldn’t get to it.

So, the journey began with the Pugsgiving event in Lakeland and then we headed to Miami.  Thanks to Ann for making the Pugsgiving event so special to the boys & Luna!  Ann,you are just terrific.  More about the events and the trip in blogs to follow.  Don’t miss ‘em.

Mommy’s Little Helper

Henry at the computer

I guess the apples really don’t fall far from the tree.  Since I work from home, Henry has decided that he, too wants to be a computer programmer and earn some extra income.  (Hey, I am all for that!  Earn your keep, boy!  Good for you!)  Here is Henry.  Tell me:  Is he “working hard?” OR Is he “hardly working?”  Maybe for Christmas Santa will bring him a lovely pocket protector.

2 Good Boys

Benjamin & Henry

It is hard to really remember (although it hasn’t even been a year) of what life was like before we adopted little Luna.  But before Luna joined our family, the only dogs in our family were the boys, Benjamin & Henry.  Heck, sometimes we still just call the 3 of them “the boys.”  She doesn’t seem to know the difference.  Even if she did, I don’t think she’d care much.  She is a tomboy anyway.  (I mean she does lift her leg to pee….)  In any case, the one thing I do miss (don’t get me wrong…I wouldn’t trade little Luna for a million bucks…but…) the boys do a good job getting their pictures taken and Luna is neither photogenic or patient.  Thus, Luna usually makes for the blurry spot in the “family” photo.

So, I decided to take a couple of photos of just the boys for a change.  They do a good job when I tell them just to sit there and look cute.  They are good boys.  It is funny when I look at this photo because so often people stop me and ask how do I tell the boys apart.  Well, to us pug lovers, how can’t you?  It is quite evident, though, especially when they are right next to each other that Benjamin & Henry look quite different.

Post Dog Park Ice Cream

Henry at Ritter's

Since the boys & Luna had done such an awesome job being social, yet well behaved puggies at the dog park, we decided to stop for a frozen treat at our local ice cream hang out.  Ritter’s has the best “ice cream” in town.  It is actually frozen custard but if you call it that no one really knows what you are talking about.  Anyway, we made a little stop on the way home from the dog park.  The dogs were in luck because one of the flavors of the day was pumpkin.  Even though pumpkin is their least favorite part of their daily meals (turkey, yogurt, oatmeal and pumpkin), it is a little different when the pumpkin flavor now has some sugar and is magically transformed into a frozen treat.  Then it becomes quite yummy!

Check out the photo of Henry on top of the ice cream cone statue.  He truly believes he is King of the World!  They were all feeling fine as they scarfed down their doggie dish of yummy pumpkin ice cream.  We love the weekends and we are sure the pugs do, too!

Keeping it Local

At the dog park

This weekend the weather was beautiful here in sunny Florida. There was plenty of sun but not too hot. Perfect pug weather! We decided to try out the nearby dog park. Usually we make it a day and travel over an hour to the big fancy dog park in Jacksonville but there is a dog park much closer to home that we have never given a chance. So, we decided that this would be weekend that we gave it whirl. The park, called Riviera Oaks Park & Dog Park, has at least 3 unique areas. There is a space for big dogs, a small dog area and yet another enclosure where both big and small dogs can mingle. This part has a pavilion for large human gatherings, as well. There is also a lake there and perhaps a walking path but we did not venture to that section of the park on this trip. It was great that is only about 20 minutes from home and since it is a public park, it’s free! Sweet!

Benjamin

The pugs had a good time. They met a few other small dogs. Of course, the one that “stands out” is Pepe, the black poodle that tried to go from dog to dog to see who he could hump the longest. Pepe’s first attempt on our pack was on Benjamin. Well, if there is one thing that will turn sweet Baby Benny into a fighting machine, that’s humping him. At first, Benjamin just looked at us as Pepe tried to defile the poor boy. He gave us a look that seemed to say, “You gonna take care of this or you want me to do it for myself?” We told Benjamin to go ahead and tell Pepe about his lack of manners. So, sweet Baby Benny put on his Exorcist voice and told Pepe that he wasn’t a pug to be messed with.

Luna

From there, Pepe thought he’d better try the “little one.” He went straight for Luna. Luna just seemed to wiggle around and out maneuver Pepe’s advances. Luna seemed to pose to much of a challenge for ol’ Pepe. So of course, next in line was King Henry. Fortunately, as Pepe was making his way for the Doodle boy, Pepe spotted a quite lovely fluffy white poodle that suited his fancy much more. Off in a different direction Pepe pranced where he promptly went to town on the lovely little white fluffy pup until the owner of that dog interrupted Pepe’s affection. It was at this time that both the poodles exited the dog park.

Henry

Whew. It would not have been a pretty picture if Pepe had tried to go back to Henry who enjoys being humped less than Benjamin. Henry turns on his chimpanzee imitation whenever another dogs tries to make him succumb to being the bottom dog.

The next truly notable dog that the pugs met was Maxine, a Jack Russell Terrier. All the pugs were mesmerized by this quick little specimen. She was a fast one. Benjamin and Luna both wanted to chase her but they each realized that it was futile. So, they just decided to chase each other for a little while.

It was then time to head on home. However, we did stop for ice cream on the way. (You can read about that in the next blog!) What a bunch of spoiled puppies, huh? Don’t ya just love the weekends?

Coach Potatoes

Coach Potatoes

During the day, while I am at home working, the pugs are generally pretty mellow.  They spend most of their time sunning themselves and catching up on their sleep.  Most of the action doesn’t really happen until I get off work, so they make sure they get all the rest they need during the day so they will have plenty of energy for their walk in the evening.

They have a lot of favorite sleeping spots around the house, but one of their favorites is definitely the sofa.  The most coveted spot is the arm of the sofa.  From this position, they can see right out the front door.  They love this spot because it allows the pug to catch a cat nap and still be able to spot any passersby.  Because barking at those who walk by the house is definitely one of their favorite pastimes.
